Definitely true, but most people don't know that. So, because they'll see a ruby, they'll probably think "It's nice, but why didn't you get a DIAMOND? You have the money for that!"

I love that he didn't go the I-have-money-look-at-the-giant-diamond-I-bought route; it shows that he doesn't feel like he has something to prove by spending a huge load of money on what most would consider to be super-expensive and worthy of showing off their status. You know: the PS manner of thinking that some members have. :P

it tends to look black, i think, because it's made of such high quality step cuts... which can be difficult to photograph

if i remember right, it originally belonged to the Queen Mother (the current queen's mom) and was given to her when the current queen was born.
