the nova-science now show on pbs is doing a show tonight on man made diamonds. the preview i saw confused me a little because of the secrecy involved. the diamonds where being used for technology purposes, and not jewelry, yet. are takara diamonds the same thing? why the big secret, if lab grown diamonds aready exist? these were colorless, is that the difference? anyway, i don't know what time, so check your tv guide.

I haven't seen the show but based on your description, it probably refers to CVD grown diamonds (grown from gas). That is primarily Apollo Diamonds area, as well as E6 (DeBeers).
The diamonds that Takara sells are grown by HPHT. Gemesis, D.Nea, etc. all use HPHT (high pressure, high temperature).
The processes are very different but both produce real diamond...they both use extremes of pressure, but one is high pressure, the other is ultra-low/no pressure.
Also, unfortunately for the most part there are very few white diamonds available that are lab grown for jewelry use (R&D extras mostly). Its very slow to grow whites in the HPHT process, and under CVD, they typically cannot grow them high enough before hitting growth problems...hence why they are more for tech uses right now since it produces small thin wafers.
Hope that helps Less

THANKS!! that was very interesting. But, one would think, that if we will be using diamond in technical applications, it would have to be equal economically to that of silicon....but! watch if the price doesn't become as economical when used in gemstone "applications"., iow, sure, it'll be cheap for industry to use, but if you and me want a ring, they will jack the price up to equal that of mined stones, and claim the price is justified by the research/production costs...
