I was considering moissanite or Asha diamonds but now I'm even thinking that if white sapphire has enough sparkle then maybe we should get that as the center stone on the engagement ring. It would be great to say I have a sapphire and diamond ring I'm just worried it might not have enough brilliance even if I get a internally flawless, E color, Ideal cut. I was thinking round brilliant or cushion (I love cushion!).

What do you girls think about white sapphire
OR even white zircon?

Many thanks!
Lucy

hi lucy!

personally i am not a fan of white sapphire. not a gem expert but i'm thinking a white spinel might look better in terms of light return.

gemstone e-rings are lovely, but what i'm gathering from what you wrote is that you want a clear stone with sparkle. you were looking into moissy or asha but it would be great to say you have a sapph/diamond ring. is this because you are worried about being questioned or because you really love sapphires/zircon?

I had (still have somewhere about) what I believe was a round white sapphire set in a solitaire setting. They really don't sparkle that much if at all.

I would say if you love sapphires (like I do), get a yellow, pink or blue cultured sapphire. Those have the same properties as the real sapphires, only they're lab created. Trust me, they're gorgeous! I have a pendant and a matching ring. smile

I have not seen a white sapphire in person, but from the photos I have seen they have a milky appearance rather than a crisp clear one like an Asha or a diamond with good clarity. I think white topaz may be a good option, but that is softer than an Asha.. From what you've written, it seems important to you that it is a REAL gem stone rather than man made, and if that is the case than maybe saving up for what you really want (a diamond) is the only answer. You could always try out an Asha and see what your thoughts are, I love mine, but I also don't care what others think about it, I know its pretty =) , and I didn't go broke for it.

The white sapphire lacks brillance. I ended up selling the two I had, they just do not have sparkle!

Just my 2 cents! A clear zircon might look a hair better.

Thanks for the quick replies! No, we do NOT want a diamond (so pretty but we're not getting one). We are either going to get an Asha, or a white sapphire, or white zircon, or maybe white spinel as suggested.

I had read that superior white sapphires (the best of the best) is absolutely gorgeous and has tons of sparkle BUT doesn't have the same sparkle diamond does.

White zircon I know is very sparkly and as close to a diamonds sparkle as any real gem can get. It has double refraction like moissanite and dispersion similar to a diamond. Here is what I read about it:

"... in general, zircon is a magnificent jewelry stone. With a luster just short of diamond and a very high refractive index, exceptional brilliance is possible when a piece is well cut and polished. That stones with light body color (white or colorless) may show strong dispersion is a bonus." The downside is that it is about an 8 on the mohs scale.

Anyway, I was hoping one of you ladies may have seen it in a setting. Any more insight would be great.

Lucy

Zircons are magnificent but I really think the downside is the softness. People talk about CZ's being easily scratched at 8.5 on the mohs scale but the price is going to be less usually than a well cut white zircon.

I'd say out of your choices, asha is the way to go since the asha rates higher on the mohs scale than a typical CZ. And looks the MOST like a natural diamond!!

White sapphire does not make a good center stone if you are looking for a diamond simulant. They are pretty, but do not have the pizzaz of a diamond, or a well cut CZ.

To me, white sapphire looks very glassy and not sparkly at all. It is still a pretty stone, but I personally don't like it.

I'm not a fan... they look milky, don't have much sparkle and they actually look very blue-ish and odd to me. I prefer colored sapphire.

To me a white sapphire doesn't have sparkle.... but it has a white glow about it.... can make some nice side stones... all depending on what you are going to set with them....

I'm a major fan of sapphires, but white sapphire is not that pretty in my opinion for use as a center stone. It has that milky almost fake diamond look to it. Think old CZ from many decades ago that would turn cloudy over time. That's what I think about when I see white sapphires.

I'm actually going with a near colorless (slight light blue-violet tint)7mm round "diamond-cut" sapphire for the center stone in my engagement ring. I'm going with a sapphire for several reasons... not nearly as expensive as a diamond of similar size, 9.0 MOHS hardness so it will withstand everyday wear, and later if my honey wants to replace it with a diamond it will not be a big ordeal of having to rebuild the setting since it is already the standard size of a diamond.

I was also considering a light violet square cut sapphire in a traditional cut (which retains more color and light) and would highly recommend you check out www.gemselect.com if you want to see what is available. They have a really nice selection of sapphires. I don't work for them, but was highly impressed that I could see the actual stone they were selling instead of telling them a color, shape and size. Most of the other cut gemstone sites didn't have that option. They also have a large collection of un-treated sapphires... and those are getting harder to find as well.

A "diamond-cut" sapphire is not very common because it does lose some of it's light refraction and color in this cut, but it still sparkles very nicely. Traditionally sapphires were cut to retain more color, making them more valuable. But I am quite happy with my "diamond-cut" sapphire. See Avatar pic. 1.69 ct Near Colorless VVS Sapphire 7mm round.

The Sapphire will be here on Monday and I want to make sure it makes it here okay before I order my setting.

I'm totally in love with the BTD 1895 Cartier Reproduction (already in my BTD shopping cart and ready to go) and will get that ordered probably as soon as I see the stone in my hand. :-)

I've been looking at every possible available option for my ring and keep coming back to BTD... you folks make amazing rings and I will surely post a picture as soon as it is completed.

Here are some pictures of a high quality white sapphire. It does not look like a diamond, but I think it is very pretty.

white sapphire engagement ring

Here are some pictures of an engagement ring with a diamond center and white sapphires on either side. You can see a difference, but I honestly can't see a HUGE difference.

in photos, a well-cut and well-photographed white/clear sapphire will look very diamond-like.

but in real life, the difference is very obvious.

white sapphires are pretty, but they (IMO, of course) are not gonna "pass" as a diamond.

Hey Girls and BTD!

I'm so excited! My ring arrived Monday and immediately went to the jewelers to be set with my sapphire. I got it back just a few hours ago. Here's a picture... which really doesn't do it justice. Thank you BTD! I love my ring!

Here's another picture from inside... not in direct sunlight like above. It shows a bit more of the blue/violet tint in the stone. I knew the sapphire wasn't going to have as much sparkle as a diamond or Asha, but I already got a compliment from a stranger today and it does shine!

Hi Lib, congrats! The ring looks very beautiful on your hand. The stone almost looks like a moissanite in the indoor shot. I'm glad that you are happy with your ring. That's what matters.
