The trick with the baking soda is to add a little salt to the mix and make sure the silver touches the foil like mentioned before. Also, use the boiling water. Warning, this method will pull tarnish out of even tiny crevices which is not always a good thing if you are working with really old silver worth money. Good luck.
How much baking soda to salt please? I'd like to give this a try tonight....thanks

I tried with the baking soda, but it didn't really work. It made some areas a little cleaner, but I would still have to polish it to get it clean.
I haven't been able to find the laundry soda yet - still looking.......

if there's a Lowe's or a Home Depot or a pool/spa place near you, go to the pool chemicals section and look for Soda Ash. the only grocery type store near me that carries Laundry Soda is Kroger, but we've got a ridiculously crazy one that has things other Kroger stores i've been in don't have. apparently some Ace Hardware stores have the Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda, too.

I don't know if this is true, but I own a silver goblet that has some patterns on the outside, and I asked a friend about how to clean it and she said not to, that it would decrease the value? Is that true? It does have that silver patina to it, you know. But I had NEVER heard not to polish it, and now I'm scared to touch it! And I only find stuff about coins online.!

Have you considered having it appraised for insurance value, and the appraiser could probably tell you for certain? But I'd say when in doubt don't touch it- its easy enough to clean it but since you can't unclean it then leave it be.

Totally not recommend for something of value, but I had some old silverware from my great gma, that my grandpa grout back for her while he was overseas fighting the war. Well it was in the bottom of this old box of pictures and stuff I had no idea it was there. I was going through the box a couple of months ago looking for something else and found the silverware. It was still in it's original box, had it's certificate of authenticity and guarantee and everything, but oh my was it ugly, it was green and black and even a little bluish looking.
I have had this box for about 18years since gyms passed away, and who knows how long it was packed away before that.
Christmas eve, my dd begged to be allowed to try to clean the silverware so we could use it for dinner the next day. We tried all kinds of the normal things. Finally, in desperation I got out my ajax and one of those Lysol wipes that has one rough side and one smooth side. That mixture worked like magic, it stunk like crazy though, we had an assembly line, I would scrub the silver and then dd would wash it. It took all the tarnish off. I will say that it probably left some scratch marks, but since I have know idea what the silverware looked like before I can't tell for sure.
Either way, I was pleased with the silverware and we were able to use it for dinner the next day.
