I was at JC Penney the other day, browsing the jewelry, and saw that they sell some of their diamonds in Platinaire settings. Upon looking it up, I learned it's an alloy of .925 silver and 5% platinum. This supposedly makes the ring as hard as 14K gold, never tarnishes, and gives the ring the color of plat. I'm wondering if any of you have ever had anything in this, b/c if it patinas like silver (more whitish than plat's gray) I think I'd like it. JCP also seems to be the only people that sell it, even though it appears to be it's own brand.

OH MY GOSH...I didn't know they carried that...so the platinum is MIXED in and not a coating. HSN carried a line like that at one time and I wished I had purchased more pieces. I have two bangles/eternity with gemstones alternating with cz...and I LOVE them...that's all I have like this. They have never tarnished and no "coating" has worn off - just the usual scratches from wear. Thanks for posting this...I will check that line out!

My question would be can the rings then be resized? It would be great for things like necklaces and bangles, but I would be concerned over a ring intended for long term wear such as an engagement ring. ~Red

The info in the link says it can be sized easily.

True Poppyseed but would the average jewelry store carry the mix for resizing or repairs? I know I haven't tried palladium yet because of these types of issues (along with the heat/gas/brittle issue). Your white gold that doesn't need rhodium intrigues me but I have had issues with nickel. Have my eye on one of your settings currently. Sorry wandered off topic. The Planitare sounds very nice I hope to see more of it in the future ~Red

Is this the same thing as P4 or Platina 4? "Platina 4 is a patented blend of 4 precious metals; silver, gold, palladium, and platinum." If so, I've seen it quite a few places online. Even Avon sold a ring made of it (within the last six months or so).

This is 925 silver but with the difference being comprised of some amount of platinum instead of copper.

I stumbled onto platinaire just tonight and did a search. Here is the link to a website that explains what it is, how to care for it etc. I don't think I am breaking any forum agreements but since the questions asked and I did not see this link recommended, I felt that this site would answer all your questions.

There have been some posts on it, but I personally have not tried it.
