What is the protocol on this? I have been dreaming of one setting with one particular stone, but I had never seen it before, only once I hit the forums/btd site. I'm not completely settled on it, so if need be I can strike it from my mind hehe. Is there any unsaid rule about this?

Hmmmmmmm.... While I think it's very considerate of you to ask about this, but I don't think it's a question for the general group. If I were you, I'd PM the person who's ring you'd like to re-create. That person's opinion is the only one's who will matter... Personally, I haven't had any custom pieces made, so if someone showed up to the boards with my exact set, I would hardly be upset... I'd be like WooHoo I have a Twinsie! lol However, if I had a ring made that was very special to me in different ways and had a lot of sentimental value attached to the design, maybe I wouldn't want it replicated.

So, not very helpful, lol, but I think you should go straight to the source to ask this question.

Totally don't be scared to ask.... everyone here is super nice so if there is a reason they might not want their ring recreated then all they will do is say no.... but there is also ladies here that would find it totally flattering that someone would want their ring and help in every way they could to make it come true for you....

Ok. Thanks your guys advice, but the picture is on the btd main site on the ring section, so I'm assuming if it's there they don't mind it being replicated. I will send her a message though, if that's the one I go with.

Is it a custom setting? If it is custom, I would definitely ask. Although pics are posted here, they still belpng to someone...and now to BTD. Same with PS. I think most people would be flattered though.

I am flattered too, but a little sad that there will be one the exact same as mine...in size and everything. But it is great business for Schubachs, and that makes me so happy for them, as mine was months of stress for all of us, and they deserve to profit from going through that.

The other thing to remember, is that there are very few pieces that weren`t insprired by something else. And every jeweler has their own style, so nothing hand made is really ever exactly that same...the nuances are always a little different.

I know with my ring I originally wanted to do something similar to one of poshpeppers rings but I wanted to change it up a bit to keep hers unique. Who knows though I may still make something similar someday. I think its more fun to borrow aspects from different rings to create your own

The only thing that would ever bother me is if the person that was wanting my ring lived close to me.... other then that there could be a ring recreated like mine for ever lady on this forum and I would have no problem what so ever....

I agree with Roogirl. I mean, if you don't live near the "inspiration" and don't know them personally, why should they care? That said, if I did copy someone's design, I wouldn't post it on a forum they frequent. There's a saying that what the eye doesn't see, the heart can't grieve...so if the inspiration doesn't come face to face with the reproduction, where's the harm??

I sure don't live near them, thats for sure. I'm assuming if their pictures are on btd's homepage for the ring setting they dont mind, thats what its there for right? inspiration? It wouldnt be the same size, because her center rock is much too big for me. I thought it was pretty rare, because I hadnt seen that stone with the setting, but the more i look the more i see..

Well, I'd still ask. I think the picture is up to show off the stone. If you get inspiration for a "spin off" ring (like MissKK said, taking elements from the ring) I would think you wouldn't need to ask. But if you want to replicate it, it doesn't hurt to ask

I'm sure they won't mind me sharing (and I'll keep it anonymous) but I had someone contact me and ask to replicate my "snow white." That is what my dd calls my ruby ring. lol. I was all "have at it! Here's who made it, here's the email address and phone number, give him a call!"

But there's is going to be a difference since mine is an earth mined stone and has very unique properties (she has a freckle-lol.) It's not going to be the "exact" ring. Ultimately though, either way, what can we do? When we put pics out there they're GOING to inspire someone! Whether that person choses to replicate the ring exactly as it was done or tweak it to fit their tastes it doesn't change how you love your ring!

I also had someone ask to use my daughter's name. That I bristled at! I mean, I don't own it, but it's VERY unique and rare and I was upset. Had they chosen to go ahead and use it, what could I have done? lol!

The 2 that were already made have slight differences. The second video is actually very different and even made at a different bench. These ones really don`t bother me at all, and I think it is fun that people wanted to copy. The peachy pink one they are doing with this run of peachy pinks...and really, that is someone`s ering. She just wants to have something she loves, and I hope that for every girl getting their ring... Once you se what you love, it can be hard to forget it. Would it have been nice of her to change it a little??? sure!! But I just see it that my taste is so impeccable, she couldn`t think of one single way to make it better, lol.

I'm with you, Roo! All you can do is try. If they don't see the message and you don't get a response you're still off the hook. And for me, you'd not really be asking "permission" so much as letting them know, I guess? I mean, that's how I'd look at it. I would put it in question form in case there's a real issue-but as we've said if it's posted it's up for consideration!

I remember when I feel in love w/mimiryan's Morning Blush. I contacted her first and asked her if it was ok to base my ring off of hers. The colors of the stones were the same, but that was about it. Wink renamed mine Sunrise, it was made in all Wink stones in a 3 stone YG/RG setting with Regen(cushion) center and side Radiant's. Mimiryan's ring was made w/Moissanite YG/RG/WG setting all round stones. She was so gracious and wonderful about, but I am glad I asked her first even though they were only alike in stone color only.

It's the winston repro with a princess cut centre.
Her's is a 3 carat, which is just too big for me, so i would want a smaller centre

I don't recall her name .... but the winston repro is a setting that really any jeweler can get or have made for you.... that's not really a custom setting so it's up for grabs by anyone....

Yep.. You can get that setting for any stone shape... Oval Round Princess Cushion Pear Marquise... you name it you can get it for that shape....

still, if you're asking for a STOCK setting then you're in the clear (for me, that is!) I mean, if it's a customized ring then it's a bit different, like if the baguettes had been changed to trilliants, and the prongs were split, and it was two tone, AND the stone was different...now it's a bit of a different picture. Just my two cents!

Oh, Snooper's 3ct LM ring...so gorgeous. I always love seeing pics of it. Hers and Researcher's are the best rings on PS, to me

I would only ever ask if someone minded me replicating their ring if I planned on posting photos of it on the net.

Otherwise what they dont know cant hurt them!

I wouldn't if someone said they didn't want me to make a repro of their ring. But that's the kind of person I am. I've always tried to be respectful and kind. I am from the school of "what goes around comes around"
I wouldn't have a problem getting inspiration form someone. I feel like you need to tweak it a bit to make it more personalized anyhow.

I've had one family member almost copy my ring. She got the exact same setting, but changed the center stone to a yellow diamond. The thing that irked me was that she told me she changed it so it would be "better." Had she said different, it would have been gravy, but I will admit I was steamed for awhile.

I spent a couple hours the other day reading a series of threads on Pricescope - seriously old topic but it got brought back up-where someone recreated an antique ring, and all sorts of drama ensued. It was funny and sad all at once. Really, really made me appreciate the atmosphere of this board.

I think there is a huge difference in someone who is very close to you and you see on a daily/weekly basis copying your ring than someone who you only know online and will never meet. If you don't want something copied/inspired/whatever then don't post pics of it

Also...when someone you don't know asks you first, I think that is a very kind gesture. They certainly don't need to...and you would never find out if they didn't ask you first or mentioned it or posted pics of it.

Personally I would be flattered if someone thought that the design I came up with was worth reproducing

I couldn't care less if someone I don't know and most likely will never meet, and very possibly from another continent "copied" my ring, who cares, LOL.

I'm just a serial copier, I also, but not quite exactly, copied Cricket's avatar ring (she knows) for my Moissy OEC. Just waiting for the OEC to come.

I spend a lot of time with jewelry design and one morning I woke up with an idea for a new design of earrings. I made a pair and my daughter told me she had seen that design in some selection of cheap fashion jewelry. I have to wonder if I had ever seen the design before, forgot about it, then 'remembered it' thinking I had had an idea.
Some say that there is no such thing as an original idea and maybe they are right.
The Chinese say that copyright laws etc are 'unfair'. As much as I do not like some of the business practices of certain countries, they may be right about that one.
