We won't be getting a dog for a while, but we want to do our research thoroughly before we commit for 10-15 years to an animal!

We're looking for a small toy breed (around 10 lbs or less full grown), preferably hypoallergenic, but still fluffy (ie: not shorthaired or silky).
We're open to mixed/"designer" breeds.

Any experience/suggestions? Pics are welcome. smile

Wikipdia, about the Coton de Tulear:
Quote:
Coton de Tuléar has a medium to long, fluffy, cotton-like coat that is considered hair rather than fur.[2] It is a non-shedding breed with low dander. Like the poodle or Havanese (thought to be the Coton's cousin), this breed has very low allergic affects, and are considered hypoallergenic [3]. This breed has little to no shedding. Mats should be removed through daily brushing and combing. [4] (see Moult). This breed does not have the common "doggie smell", and when properly bathed and groomed does not smell at all.

That sounds pretty great to me. Of course, I say this while my 7lb toy poodle is snuggling (inside the front of my robe--LOL). So, on her behalf, I gotta say; TOY POODLES are wonderful, too. They are easy to find, but often overbred. Everyone in the world has met at least one snippy and nasty toy poodle, and that puts a lot of people off about the breed. Believe me, they can be the sweetest, loving and intelligent pets, and are extremely prone to learning human language. No shedding with them, either-----but, with either breed, you must be prepared for daily coat maintenance :-(

I'd never heard of the Coton de Tulear! I'll have to do some more looking into them.

We've also considered toy poodles. I think our biggest concern was, like you said, that they were overbred, and consequently can have a lot of health/personality problems if you're not careful. For that reason we're considering maybe going with a poodle mix?

The no shedding sounds great. I'm okay with daily coat maintenance, as this dog will be like my baby for a long time - we're wrapping up undergrad won't be having kids for at least 10 years (I'm going for my PhD, then a couple years to get financially stable), but I have this nagging maternal instinct that something small and fluffy can fill smile

Just interrupting to say that kangaroo is the cutest thing I have ever seen!!! How are kangaroos as pets?

Love your dog as well!!! I have Spaniels, but my grandma had a toy poodle for a really long time and she was the smartest dog I have ever known... She would have talked if she could!
