I disagree about the D,E,F color diamonds that OP's say most people are used to. The most common color grades sold are G,H,I.

I agree though that many people are not accustomed to seeing antique cuts, but that doesn't explain or excuse rudeness.

Your ring is so beautiful. I suspect your friends are jealous of your ring and how gorgeous it looks on you. The typical mall stores have very yellow looking stones to me, but those stones aren't antique cut. If you take it to a local jeweler in a small community like mine, everyone would gush over it. I see those types of stones all the time.

“There’s a hole in your diamond (i.e. the culet). That would bug the CRAP out of me!”
“Hmm. I would NEVER wear a ring like that.”

What the heck??! frown No one ever really commented on my original e-ring. Lily is quasi-similar to my original ring: they are both split shanks, low set and have OECs. Lily is daintier and the moissy OEC is only 0.5mm larger. I don’t get how she’s attracting all this extra attention, especially negative attention. blush Don’t get me wrong, I still LOVE my ring and I don’t regret getting her for a second, but shouldn’t that be the only thing that matters? I would NEVER tell someone their ring is ugly, dirty, cloudy, too small, too big, etc. Even if someone’s ring is not my style, I can still happily tell someone that I love how sparkly their ring is or how great it looks on them. Have people completely lost their manners?? My mom thinks they must be jealous, but I’m not even sure if they noticed it’s a new ring so this would surprise me (most of the people in my social circle aren’t into jewelry). I’m still thrilled with my ring but I’m disappointed that friends can’t be happy for me. Thanks goodness I have friends on this forum! smile

Anyone experience the same thing when you got your e-ring or upgrade? How did you respond to the snarks? So far I have only responded with bewildered silence and I would like to do better than that, lol.

Honestly, I have have seen this kind of thing PLENTY of times, but with food, clothes, hair, etc.

Aside from the fact theat they are impolite haters, they just ignorant.

It's like someone who has only ever had baloney, tastes filet mignon and thinks it tastes wonderful but says they prefer baloney and that filet mingnon is gross.

Your ring = filet mingnon
Their rings = baloney

Still catching up on this thread, but first off, Milady, contrags on your STUNNING ring! I'm so thrilled that Schubach's could make the setting work for you, I can't even tell you how happy that makes me! I love the modifications they made!

Next, don't worry about the comments - I receive them frequently while wearing antique diamonds too. If it's helpful to anyone, here are some ways that I answered these types of uncomfortable questions (and you have to respond with a condescending smile on your face, and a dreamy expression in your eyes that says "you're such an unsophisticated simpleton for not already knowing this..."

“It’s a little yellow isn’t it?”
Ummm, yes. It's Cape color. Oh, you don't know what that is? Antique diamonds were mined over 150 years ago and the mines of that time were producing beautiful light yellow stones, referred to as "cape" color. They're very special and I'm so thrilled that you noticed the color because it's such an important part of an antique diamond's history! I love the warmth - the diamond just feels so organic and alive with some color to it - like a bit of old lace. I wouldn't be caught dead with a cold colorless diamond - blech!

“There’s a hole in your diamond (i.e. the culet). That would bug the CRAP out of me!”
[first, stare at her like she's grown another head, withering, lasting several seconds]
Do you mean the culet? You've never seen an antique diamond before? Oh, well I guess that's not surprising, since they're SO rare - you'd never find one at a crappy MALL jeweler, hahahahaha (then glance at whatever Zales masterpiece she's wearing and pretend to look embarassed). The culet is the 58th facet. It's a part of the stone's history - the part of the pavillion that would normally come to a point was faceted for 2 reasons: to prevent chipping and to reflect throughout the stone (kozibe effect). Oh dear, you're starting to look bored! I'll stop with the old cut lecture now, but the large culet is one of the things I love most about my stone!

“Hmm. I would NEVER wear a ring like that.”
[mock expression of sympathy combined with pity]
Ohhhh, you mean because the delicate micrpave setting style wouldn't compliment your larger fingers? Don't fret, there's a ring style out there for everyone. For example, the ring you're wearing right now is...ummm...well, it really suits you!

grin

PS - there are ALL kinds of rude in the world!

I used to wear the most amazing 2.36ct OEC. It's the one I've always regretted selling except that it now belongs to a wonderful lady who adores it more than anything, so it's in the best possible home. But something about that stone was always magical to me!

Anyway, it was a very warm stone. One that you really have to flaunt the color and be proud of it because it wasn't just warm - it showed a lot of yellow and it was magnificent!

Anyway, I wore it to work one day and one of my colleagues said, "Oh, it's quite yellow, isn't it?!" followed by "That's not my cup of tea AT ALL." She then went on to tell me that her favorite antique diamond I had owned up until that point was my first one, which was actually a Lizzie cz!

Then, a few months later, I was shopping at Nordstrom and the sales lady at the jewelry counter utterly freaked over my ring, complimenting it like crazy and asking if it was a fancy yellow antique diamond, and gushing that she wants a ring just like it one day - how it's so original, and not like anything anyone else has, etc.

It's just so subjective!

I also had a 3ct L colored antique Asscher for awhile. I sent it to Leon for sizing and both he and his assistant, every time I called, referred to it as "The crooked asscher that's a little yellow" lol. Then Leon used my images that I sent him and put them on the site, although he did have his photographer edit it to make the diamond whiter, lololol. But on the flip side, that ring was majorly beloved on pricescope and to my eye it was always very white. A stunning stone.

People are just so funny. I think preconceived notions are too binding - why would anyone want to limit herself? There's so much beauty in the world, I just feel sorry for people who lock themselves inside a box that was built by deBeers...
