Unfortunately I didn't have both stones at the same time in order to compare. But I do have pics of an elongated antique asscher diamond someplace, let me look. It might be a nice comp to the Krupp cut, just to show that, in antique stones, these cuts (asscher and Krupp) do exist and do look very different from an EC. One shouldn't expect an asscher or a Krupp to look and feel like an EC - they are different beasts. Here we go! This is a 1.86ct Antique Elongated Asscher/EC, which I think looks a lot like a Krupp. I sold this stone to my best friend for her engagement ring - it's still one of my all time favorites and we haven't seen another one like it! That is an excellent post!! As you can see, the elongated Asscher is far closer to a "Krupps" than an EC, and they don't compare at all - too many steps on the Asscher. I think people tend to get confused with the Krupps cut, and think that it's another type of diamond cut, when really Krupps is just the name given to the elongated Asscher owned by Elizabeth Taylor. The diamond was named for the Krupp family of German industrialists and was owned by Vera Krupp prior to being bought by Richard Burton. If you were to want a similarly cut diamond, you would have to look for an elongated Asscher, much like the one Erica has pictured...... Krupps Diamond

Slightly OT, but still related. I thought that an Asscher cut was a special cut, only cut by the Royal Asscher company. So while we call things an Asscher cut, unless cut buy that company, they are really just square ECs?? I am not saying this as something I know, just something that I so confused about. On another board I think that I read once that Leon called Erica's asscher a square EC, as it was not a true asscher? I have also read this on PS, and it seems like their are Asscher purists, and unless your Asscher was just by the Royal Asscher people, they say it is NOT an Asccher, but an EC.

MissBrowner,
I have a 3ct asscher with baguettes as my engagement ring (cz)- and the fabulous thing about it is that no one else has a real one to compare it to! I work at an oil company, and there are plenty of large stones running around the office. I've gotten nothing but compliments, oohs and aahs. Choose a quality setting, love your ring, wear it with confidence, and don't look back. No one will question you if it's believable for your lifestyle:-) VERY TRUE!!!!!!!!!!! Although the asscher was not the one for me, it was the first and only that anyone had ever even seen before outside of a store around here and it was never questioned. The only other asscher I've seen in real life myself myself was in a Harry Winston window. Where I'm from, everyone around here has round or princess. Next runners up would be pear and marquis. Then I've seen a few EC's. I've seen ONE antique cut. But I have yet to see someone walking around with an asccher diamond or square emerald.

As far as I have been told by some diamond people, what we call the "Asscher" is actually a modified square step cut, and not a true square emerald cut which has less pronounced corners, and a few less steps. IIRC A modified square step is made to look similar to a Royal Asscher and has larger step facets, a higher crown, and a smaller table.

I don't know too much about this, but I believe the grading labs don't use the term "Asscher" (unless it's a branded Royal Asscher). That being said, the term "Asscher" is now used generically to describe a specific style of step cut.
For example, GOG's Octavia's are called Asschers on the site, however the AGS report calls them EC's. These aren't cut by RA Company, so are they technically asschers? I think they are.
Also, with vintage stones, it's possible that an antique stone was originally cut by RA. How can we know it wasn't? There were no laser inscriptions back then, and the Royal Asscher cut is very recent in their history. Prior to that they were cutting what we think of as regular asschers, and many antique square or elongated step cuts with deep corners may well have been original "asschers" at one time, I would think.
Interesting question, though. I'll do some more research about it - I recall reading a lot on the subject when I was buying my own antique asscher (which I sold a long time ago) but I don't remember any more!
