First let me say you are a thoughtful man indeed!

I think the etsy ring however is a HUGE risk. In my very very humble opinion, to me, it doesn't look like an engagement ring. I would assume in fact that it wasn't. That being said, if the enamel (black stuff) wasn't there, and you added some small channel set moissies, or moissies/ white sapphire to the curls of the waves and it was a bright polished ring to me anyway, it would seem more like an engagement ring. I hope I didn't offend. Keep us posted!! smile

yes I have to agree with that Etsy ring being a big risk, It kind of reminds me of something you would give your girl friend in High School defiantly not engagement like. But I do love the idea of a sapphire and there is so much you can do with it. We have lots of good board jewelers here that I am sure can help you out. I actually really like this ring from the heart and water collection http://www.etsy.com/listing/83969678/iolani-ring-in-18k-yellow-gold-sterling

It looks like a matching wedding band is also available for this style, which is nice if she plans on wearing one.

I love the Iolani ring from HoW but it's a blue zircon and is no way a stone you can wear on a daily basis. The facets will abrade quickly with regular wear as it is a soft stone.

I vote for a concave cut btd kashmir sapphire (I am biaised! - because I have one and have seen both a diamond cut and concave cut in person and the concave cut is brighter in pretty much all lights, IMO)

Here's my ring with BTD concave cute kashmir sapphire if you wanna check out the stone - http://betterthandiamond.com/discussion/...te_w#Post646428

pics of stone on its own - http://betterthandiamond.com/discussion/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=576632#Post576632

with maybe these settings?

I haven't read all the responses you have gotten, and I'm sure you have been given some great ideas for everything.

You know your girlfriend best and I honestly think a more none-traditional ring is the way to go. I love the ring you found on etsy. If she loves blue, have you thought of an aquamarine stone? It's the stone sailors used to take with them when they went to sea to protect them. Also, if she does massages you could consider a bezel set stone...not only does that setting protect the stone, but there are no prongs to scratch anyone or get caught on anything. I found this ring on etsy to just give you an idea :

As far as the proposal...I think you should just wait until you feel the time is right....I don't think there is one "perfect" time to do it, when you feel it's right...that's when to ask her.
Good luck! I hope you find just what you are looking for!
Megan

Here is another one I found on etsy..this one is a little more price wise, but it's also set in palladium

very pretty rings megan, but to the OP, aqua is also not a stone that can stand daily wear unfortunately!
