Olive your tattoos are truly amazing!! I would also love to hear the meanings behind each of them.
I have a small flower on my lower back/hip area. Not a "tramp stamp", just a single flower.
I want to get a tattoo in remembrance of my mom. I just havent found the right one yet. I have always wanted to get angel wings down my entire back, I am just not sure I have the courage.

Thanks guys M2D my back hurt the most, but no pain no gain!! lol I'm not discouraging you, just a fact.
The upper Arm Clock is actually a picture of a clock I have in my house. I have a whole Paris theme going on, not sure why but I just love it. The time on the clock is my daughter's birthday and the date on the postage stamp is me & my fiance's anniversary.
The lower arm of the birds, no special meaning...I just really liked the design.
My foot - obvious meaning lol
My back was a cover up of a small fairy sitting on a flower. I went a little over board with the cover up LOL but as we all like to say "GO BIG or go home". I found a design I liked online and just changed around what I liked. True Love is a mix of things. Partly my daughter, because there is no love like that of unconditional love. Partly of what I was in search for with a partner and have now found

Thanks Joolsie! My back is as bright as the day I got it. I don't allow sun on it too much and if I do I put a ton of sunscreen. Can't wait to see yours
BLIMEY OLIVE!!! Those are PHENOMENAL! Looking at you is like going to the art museum, I could study those for hours. I really dig that one on your foot, it is SO cool! You rock, girl

LMAO Bumble, thanks...my foot is my favorite one too I think.
I had my lip pierced for YEARS but while in Medical School they had me take it out.. for obvious reasons. I dont think anyone wants their family physician to have their lip pierced!
I still have the hole though!
I'm sure I have a picture of it.. but it wasnt that impressive haha

Most of mine are closed up right now. I have had both daiths, some cartilage, some lobe piercing, septum, tongue, navel as well as several others. When my friend was apprenticing I had quite a lot done just because I didn't mind being a human pincushion. lol. I still have the daiths and the lobe piercings. That's it! Everything else was removed for one reason or another. Babies being biggies!
I only have two pieces, but they're both fairly intensive. My back is 3/4 covered (no plans on doing more) and I have one that goes from hip to hip, pubic bone to navel. That one is blown out from pregnancies and needs touching up, but I doubt I'll get around to it anytime soon, if ever. My back is very special to me. My front is as well, for a different reason.

You can't submerge any tattoo in water for at least 2 weeks so just taking a shower isn't going to hurt it. As long as you keep it moisturized you should be good to go.

My back is a scene from a fairy tale my father used to tell me growing up. It's very beautiful and done in a watercolor style. Kind of pre-raphaelite tones.
My front is very different. New school swallows in different colors with starbursts and cherries.
it will stretch, but it should also return to it's regular-ish size. A lot depends on your skin's elasticity.
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Im going to have a big old hole in my belly. Haha. Maybe I can get it stitched up!
I just looked at my belly button, and I took it out more than 3 years ago. 1.5 pregnancies later, it is a little stretched, but not that anyone would ever notice. After babies, your slight askew naval piercing is the LAST thing you will be worried about in terms of your body. HAHAHA, just you wait.
I also had my nose pierced, but took it out around 24...so 8 years ago. The hole is still there if I look really closely, but I don't think anything would fit in it.
And I just have 1 tatoo, a "tramp stamp" and that will not be photographed, lol. I will use it as a warning to my kids. Do not ink yourself unless you are sure, and have given it real thought. It has emaning to me, but I wish I had not done it. However, it is quite low and I would never wear any pants that low ago, so it is kinda funny.

What is your tramp stamp Jcent??
I used to tease my family that I was going to have
"LLAMA MOMMA" tattooed as a tramp stamp,..that way when they change my diapers someday in the retirement home,..they will all have something to laugh at.

No ink here as I seem to be allergic to "everything" so I would be afraid of a reaction. However I am an old freak and have several piercings (location(s) shall remain undisclosed)that have been with me since before piercings were trendy.
Mr has a piercing as well that is technically not allowed with his job but also has had it for so long that he doesn't give a darn and is very discrete, he did give up his ear piercing though.
He removed his tattoo (laser) after doing his residency at a federal hospital and seeing 80yr old men with tattoos in the same area, forearm, which is a bad area for an enduring tattoo.
Our eldest has a Celtic cross on her back and both wrists tattooed. One is a bracelet and the other is inside the wrist both can be easily covered with a watch or bracelet. ~Red
I have my belly button peirced, I don't wear it anymore, but just wanted to say the hole did not stretch when I was pregnant with DS and its not stretching with this pregnancy either.

My kids were like that too! lol!
And sadly, the piece on my back is from the fairy tale my dad told me growing up-like on a nightly basis. I had it done in my early twenties. Years later dd was born and dh proposed that we name her after the tale. We did. But now I have this big elaborate piece "about" my daughter and my boys are wondering when THEY'RE going to make it on me. No plans to have that happen and it would be rather funky if I did. lol. I told dh that can be his job now. Boys on him, girl on me.
Love this topic!I only have 2 for now,but I want to get moooore!! I have a black A in a gothic font, with a red heart outline around it on my left wrist,to represent my husband;I also have a ladybug on my forearm. The next ones I want are the paw print of my blind kitty,Pochi, tattooed behind my left ear, with his name under it;then I want Live Love Laugh and Believe on the inside of my wrists.I hope to get them soon!

I originally missed this part about your husband having his removed. I hear that is beyond painful.

I have a lot of tattoos and amazingly, have not really taken pictures of them. I will have to do that for my sparkly sisters. I have had many piercings through out the years but the only ones I currently have are my conch, both nostrils with a screw stud, and my lobes. I can list out all the ones I have had if anyone is interested.
I have had my monroe and medusa done two different times, side lip, septum, tongue, navel twice, nipples twice, and one that was below the belt. All are closed now:

That's alooooootttta piercings lol. You had ear surgery to close them? Wow I didn't know they did that. I want an OEC for my labret...think I can find it? lmao
OK...Here are some of my tattoos. First I will list the ones I don't have pics of.
"Jesus Saves" One word on each wrist.
"Born Again" Back of my neck
"Where you go I go" Left side of calf with light grey music notes, it is a lyric from a song by Jesus Culture.
"Daughter of the King of kings, servant of the Lord" Written in Hebrew on my left top my shoulder, hard to explain the location but Rhianna has a tattoo in the same spot if you want to google and see where I am talking about.
My chest piece can be seen here , you can also sort of see the Hebrew tat that is on my shoulder.
Now onto the pics...
My DH is in the Air Force, he doesn't fly, but I was so enamored with the idea of him in uniform when we first started dating, I got this tattoo. I'm glad we ended up getting married! lol...
[img:left][/img]
I saw a pic of someone with a roses on their feet, so I copied it. One of my fave tats! You can also see my very first tat in this pic which is the tiny Jesus fish on my toe. The start of my addiction.
[img:left][/img]
This is my most recent and my largest piece. I'm a bit of a Jesus Freak!!
[img:left][/img]
before we added the words. I got it done by my artist at a local convention. Getting tattooed at a convention was probably my best tattoo experience to date. Lots of distraction and you could drink beer while getting tattooed. lol...WIN!
[img:left][/img]
This is one of my DH's pieces. It represents his brother who is an aspiring 40 year old rapper. Don't ask. lmao
Thank you!! I love the roses too. My new favorite style is traditional so I think all my tattoos from now on will be in color. But I am really glad I got the roses in black and grey. I love the way they turned out!

LOVE all the traditional work!!!! What does your chest piece say? I'm glad I did my foot in black and white too because your foot sheds skin so much it would fade easily. The roses on your feed have awesome shading, nice! I have to finish up my sleeve ... I just added to it but I didn't add that picture because it's incomplete. ...

gorgeous tats everyone!!

My 2nd tattoo... it's a 'ring' of Elvish around my ankle with freehand foliage drawn through it, symbolizing the love we share as cut a path through life. (George has the same Elvish as a 'ring' around his bicep, but with cracked stone... to him, our love is written in stone. It may become weathered and aged, but will always endure)
Front ("V" of foliage points down directly in the centre of the front):
Side:
The script is the Elvish love poem (NOT the evil "One Ring" poem from Tolkien's books). It says "One ring to show our love, One ring to bind us. One ring to seal our love and forever to entwine us." (Hence why it's a ring around my ankle, and around George's arm)
I had a major allergic reaction to the cream to help this tattoo heal. It healed kinda funny, so I've got to get it touched up, and I want it to have more depth. Not sure what to do to it though.
My first tattoo... so ashamed. I don't have pictures of it right now. It was a sunflower straight off the wall of pictures in the tattoo shop. I loved it at first, but when I saw another woman with the EXACT same tattoo, in the same PLACE on her body only 2 months later, I knew it didn't scream 'me' as much as I'd wanted it to. It's being covered over in the next year with original art.
Piercings -
~ I have 3 earring holes in each ear (though I usually only wear one), ~ I used to have the top of my ear done, but it was done with an earring gun through the cartilage and it never healed. So I let it close after a year. (I was stubborn!) ~ I pierced my nose with a tiny stud when I lived in Dublin 13 years ago, and I've never been without one ever since. Most of the time I forget it's there, unless someone comments on the little sparkle.
Pretty tame, compared to the BEAUTIFUL artwork on this thread. But it's a start! lol.
Does anyone know - can you tattoo over scars very well? I'm getting a tummy tuck done (hopefully within a year) to remove excess skin now that I've lost all my excess weight. I'd love to have a "belt" of a tattoo, rather than see a belt of a visible scar forever. Know what I mean? Anyone hear of this being done?

I have a tattoo over one of my stretch marks on my stomach. I have heard mixed reviews on tattooing over scars and stretchmarks. From what I gather, if the scar is older and not pink it can be done, BUT you don't want to have a lot of detail over the scar because ink tends to bleed (meaning it spreads out) when done over scars. So if you have something pretty graphic and not detail oriented it probably can be done. But you are going to want to wait a few years post surgery before trying it. And find someone with experience in doing tats like that.
I'm not worried about waiting to find the right artist, and for me to be healed enough. I just figured I could "pretty" it up a bit, maybe. We'll see I guess.
I'm not really worried about pain though. Regular tattoos are painful themselves. And the surgery will be painful too.

Dayna, I know I asked you before but I can't find the post to find the answer, but how did you lose your weight? I had gastric bypass and lost 130.5lbs - I would love a tummy tuck. Congratulations btw!
That was off topic, sorry.
A friend of mine also had bypass and had a tattoo put right on top of it. I also heard it can be done if it's completely healed and not pink/red. I would assume it would hurt more since that skin is scar tissue but I haven't heard that before.

Oh and I had a reaction the last time to the cream and my arm blew up like a balloon. You can get it touched up, just tell your artist what you want and i'm sure he'll have ideas. Even just making it have a shaddow would give it a completley different look.

I have a good friend that has a tattoo over his scars from a roadside bomb. I believe that the artist (can't call him anything else it is great) was extremely talented. Also the ink used has some of the purest color I have ever seen in a tattoo, bright and crisp after several yrs (black actually looks black not greenish). I would really research covering of scars to find a talent that can do it properly My $.02 ~Red

Flash, I think you can but I would go to the artist first (or a few) and ask them. It doesn't hurt to put the time in to research. I did after my first tattoo and never regretting it. Nothing worse than going into a place with high hopes and walking out with something that is going to last forever that you don't like.

LOL, I'd love the name of the artist! I'd travel for a tattoo for the right one.

I also had surgery - I had a sleeve gastrectomy. I also follow a very low carb diet, to keep my PCOS in check, and I exercise. That's the only way it would work for me. All are tools in the lifelong battle, right? Congratulations on your amazing weight loss as well! You did great!
As for covering a TT scar with a tattoo... I've just often wondered about it. I don't have any nerves in my current scars, they're just numb. So I guess I'll wait until post TT and see how that scar feels. (I'll of course wait at least a year, or until after it goes white.) Maybe I'll try a tiny tattoo on my hip, and if that takes well to the scar, then I can get the bigger piece I'm wanting to cover the whole thing.

Maybe if I were 30 years younger........
My daughter has her tongue pierced, and "snake bites". I wasn't sure I'd like the snake bites at first, but they've grown on me. She has small studs in there and I actually think they look really good.

that person's teeth are freaky. they're way too white. their teeth are freakier than their piercings.
(which reminds me - i figured out a few months ago one of the reasons i prefer British tv shows. their teeth are actually tooth-coloured, unlike here where most everyone on tee-vee has teeth like this person)

OMG!!! I'm so glad I'm not the only one that thinks that people in this country have gone crazy with their teeth whitening. Teeth are NOT supposed to be stark white! It looks totally unnatural and drives me crazy.......

I have my lip pierced from hs/college still! The hole wont seem to close and now it looks like a little freckle below my lip - lol - no one has known what it is/noticed so that's good. I would never put the lip stud back in though obviously- now that I look back over pictures it kind of looks like a growth - I always put a pretty large sparkly in there LOL.
Here's a pic from my jr year of college. I remember I was trying so hard to cover up a sunburn on my face that day! I also might be slightly intoxicated - it was the 4th of July afterall!
This was the smallest sparkly I used - I wish I could find pics of the other ones!

Wow, you ladies all have beautiful work. My husband is covered in tatts. I have one on my left hand ring finger on the inside. It's an infinity symbol. My husband has his on his left hand ring finger. He's a bartender so doesn't wear his w-band like ever, but he's got a permanent ring on.
I was a little scared, so they watered down the ink and you can barely see it. It kind of just looks like I got some pen ink on my finger a little. Basically non-existent.
I've been thinking about getting it redone darker. But now that I'm in "diamond" school at the GIA and planning a career change -- maybe a tatted up hand isn't the best idea.
BUT for our 6th anniversary coming up in September. My DH and I will be getting matching tattoos again. I don't know where he wants his, but I want to get mine on my left foot.
It will have our anniversary date in roman numerals and "now my heart is full". A Morrissey song/lyrics. My husband and I are HUGE morrissey fans. It's how I got the nick name Lorrissey. When I was in JR. High, some kids started calling me that to mock me, but I thought it was brilliant and I took it and ran with it. Everyone called me Lorrissey - even my teachers. It just kind of stuck. Hence - my screen name.
Our other choice (more morrissey lyrics) was: "true to you" or "i'll always stay true to you" (the longer version)
My husband has other Morrissey lyrics tattooed on him. I have always wanted to get a Morrissey-related tatt. I still may get "true to you" or "i'll always stay true to you" done -- maybe on my right foot.
You beautiful ladies with tatts on your foot ---- how did that go? I am really afraid. On a scale of 1 to 10 - how painful? easy? was it?

Love the ideas My foot was painful, about a 7-8, so I thought at the time. I got my back done and I realized what a real 8 was...and a 9 and a 10 LOL. It depends on how big you go, where on your foot, who is doing the tattoo, and how much meat you have on your foot. As you can see mine goes around my ankle and down over on top of my foot. I found the ankle part to hurt more than the foot which surprises most people. I have pretty boney feet, the artist did not have a heavy hand...so looking back now it wasn't bad at all. Make sure you post pics when you get them

I love looking through tatts online and wish I could start over every couple of years for a new look lol

I used to have a few piercings the only one I can name is my belly button, but I took it out when I was pregnant with my first baby. Actually All my piercings got taken out due to having csections. I just never put them back in. As for tattoos I love tattoos. I am thinking of getting another one, but cannot decide on which ones. I have a tramp stamp of stars on my back, a yellow ribbon for my military support duty as an ex army wife. I also have a small four leaf clover I got when I hooked up with my Fiance. It was supposed to bring me luck, but it is on my hip.
The new tattoos I want is either love yourself. and I was thinking of putting it east and west along the side of my hip or a dandelion that has turned white with a few things blowing in the wind with the saying every breath is a second chance.
My fiance says I'm good at 3 tattoos, he doesn't have any. My ex husband was all tattooed up. The funny thing is both of there were in the military. My ex regular army and my fiance is special ops so no tattoos for him while he was in. And thats secretly one thing I love about him, his clean skin. (silly huh?)

I find with tattoos, like child birth, that if you relax as much as possible and concentrate on deep breathing and kind of go else where in your mind, you can handle almost any pain. Its when you let the pain get a hold of you and control you, that you really feel it. That mixed with anxiety and it can be very hard to deal with.
Well, my fiance is a tattoo artist. I have 7 tattoos and my nose is pierced. He's done all of my tattoos. I dislike being tattooed now. I didn't mind it at first, but the more I get tattooed, the more I hate it. I love the outcome, but the process sucks. My fiance tends to linger on mine, because he wants them to be perfect. He has to look at them everyday. Haha!
I'll post pics of the bigger pieces.
Black & gray rose on my left wrist. Rose is the flower for the month of June. I was born in June.
A swallow. This one was because I love birds. I could watch them for hours. When I retire, I swear I am going to be a bird watching. It looks pinkish in the white parts here, because this was taken the day after it was done.
This one was done after I got divorced. My fiance and I were friends for years before we dated. Anyhow, I had seen a photo of a skull with flowers that Kat Von D had done. I sent it to my fiance (then friend) and said I liked it. He replied "I can do better than that". So I said show me. I only had two small tattoos before this piece, so this was a big deal. I told him if he drew something awesome, I would let him tattoo it on me. So he accepted the challenge. In the process, he asked what kind of flowers I wanted. I told him I read somewhere that tiger lilies mean "I dare you to love me". He thought the meaning was really cool and went at it. People would come into his shop, see the drawing and ask him if they could get it as a tattoo. He'd refuse and offer to draw them something else. So this one inspired a few others he did. It's on the inside of my left arm. I think this was the suckiest for pain.
This is the last one I had done. It's a gemini rose. Because, well I'm a gemini.
I also have stars on my right foot to represent my kids. A butterfly on my left ankle (first one I got), so cliche. Lastly, I have my fiance's initials tattooed on my left hand.

Sooo true Ginger! And if you drink too much before your tattoo it will also hurt more once the liquor begins to wear off. lol....I got my large leg piece done at a convention. I have to say it was the best tattoo experience I had ever had. I was able to drink a few beers during the tattoo, that coupled with all the people walking around it was a perfect distraction. People would come up and talk to me, comment on the tattoo, the four hours it took to do the tat flew by. My least painful and largest piece yet. I highly recommend conventions. Of course this was a piece that had been planned out with my artist for sometime. I am not sure if I endorse random tattoos by random artists. lol

yeah, i've heard a lot about that stuff - but everything i've heard was either "it didn't work" or "my brother's friend's cousin's roommate's little brother's girlfriend used it and it worked!"
DermaBlend, at least, i know it works, 'cuz i've used it. (not on ink, 'cuz i don't have any, but on scars and bruises and other such things - and i've seen my friends use it on their ink)

I'm having laser removal done on my tattoos. It hurts like you wouldn't believe and i'm usually really tough. I'm on my third treatment and one of the tattoos has faded considerably. Its all black but lines not a solid piece.. if that makes sense. I have to have that numbing cream put on before I go or I get upset. I'm such a baby! Here are photos taken after each treatment...
Between 6 and 10 treatments. The biggest annoyance is the cost. Its around $100 per treatment. Way more than it cost to have the tattoo done in the first place!
I thought about having my chest piece removed, but only because I found something else I liked more instead. lol...I wish the removal was as cheap and easy as the tattoo was.

Forgot to add, I have had my nose pierced for about 6 years. Right now, I have diamond nostril screw in it and I love it, because it's flush to my nose.
I had a tragus piercing, but had to get rid of it because it just wouldn't heal right.

I'm surprised a tattoo artist allowed you to drink during a tattoo. Where I live, they are supposed to refuse to tattoo you if you've had any alcohol. You bleed more if you've been drinking and that can cause issues with healing too.

The only alternative piercing I like is the nose. I think lil tiny sparkles on the nose is so cute.
I'm fearful of getting a tat, but I have wanted one for 20 years so I might as well do it. If I hadn't changed my mind now I never will. it's just the issue of the needles and how clean the ink is for my body. I'm very mindful of how inking will affect my body as I'm so sensitive.
I used to want my naval pierced - back when I had a flat belly - the memories of that time are fuzzy as a naval. haha. But, a healer, herbalist, acupuncturist and aura reader once told me that piercing your naval interrupts your flow of Chi. Deal breaker. I don't want to mess with my Chi as I need all I can get.

I have been going to the same shop since I started getting tats. I have never been downright drunk when getting tattooed. I've only ever had one or two beers prior to going in mainly to calm my nerves because for as long as I can remember I have been afraid of needles (go figure, lol). That being said, I think it's more of a don't ask, don't tell policy. They never ask and I never tell. lol...Although at the convention, I leisurely sipped a beer, I don't think my artist saw any issue with that. I don't bleed very much to begin with and have never had any issues with healing.

I've had my nose pierced since I was 16. My mom got it done for me as my 16th birthday present. I'm guessing she felt bad that she couldn't get me a car so a nose piercing I had been asking to get since I was 10 was the next best thing.
I think you're right about the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. My fiance has said they will tell you not to drink before you get tattooed and if you mention you are going to drink beforehand, they'll say you shouldn't. However, he said that doesn't mean they haven't tattooed anyone who's been drinking. It's not that they don't know someone has been drinking, they just pretend like they don't if noone says anything. lol

I forgot that I have a few pictures of my tattoos that are on facebook. This is not all of them though. Sorry if the pictures turn out really big. It just does that when I copy them from facebook.

Trying this from my iPad so let's see how well this works
As per Kanga's request here is my most recent piece. Smallest tattoo on my body. Lol
Here is my right qtr sleeve. It looks distorted in this pic because I had a tough time taking a pic of my own arm. Haha! I'll have my hubby take a better one soon
I have 4 more but need to take pics of them
My artist, whom I absolutely adore, is in Pismo Beach CA and is name is Grey Van Kuilenburg. I believe he tattoos in the LA area as well
Adding a pic of my new tattoo. This one is 2 weeks old today. Two small white hearts on the side of my right wrist. I want to add a disclaimer that most tattoo artists hate requests for white ink tattoos for several reasons. lol
This is right after it was done, so it's still reddish around the edges. It's been a complete pain to heal, because of the spot it's in.

Wow that looks great! That's a great idea for a tattoo that you want in a spot that you are 50-50 about showing all of the time. I will have to keep that in mind
I'm waiting for it to completely heal to see what it looks like. I am very fair, so you can see the white, but I think it's just going to look like a scar. On anyone with a darker complexion, white ink on it's own would just blend into to the skin and not be visible. I wouldn't recommend doing any large pieces in all white.
The place I have it has been bad for healing. I didn't realize just how much that part of my arm rubs and whacks against things.

Yes! A pain by the wrist....mine is close to healed but oh boy was hard lol
I had thought of white for a sec but the artist wouldn't do it...and mentioned that: I'm too fair skinned and would look like a scar.....by inside of wrist...not the look I was going for I still think is cool...
I got 3 tattoos yesterday morning.I wanted all three for a while and I just went and got them in one sitting. They were all small,so it was a quick thing I got smile and believe on my wrists.Smile is healing nicely, believe is still a bit red and swollen around the b,but I have very exposed veins,so I knew it would take a while. I also got a verse from a paramore song,"this heart it beats, beats for only you,my heart is yours" under my left breast. This one has a very symbolic meaning for me,and is very personal.I went through depression for most of my teens and again during the first three years of my marriage, due to infertility. Many and many times I thought that death would be the easy way out of all the pain.If I'm still here is only because of the people I love,my husband,my relatives,my friends, and also because of those occasional random strangers who sometimes give me a smile from the bottom of my heart, just by doing or saying something that makes my day better. If my heart is still beating is just because of all of these people, then and still every single day now,so I wanted something to thank them for it and to remind me that there is always going to be a reason to keep living, someone who makes me happy, for all life or for just one minute. the tattoo isn't crocked,is just my pic that sucks :P

Yep, mine pretty much looks like a scar. I'm also very fair skinned. White ink will really only show up on fair skin anyway. It would just blend into a tan skinned person.

Asu, love them - the different color start to each word. I last one, love the meaning and that you followed through. I always hear people say I want this or that and never do it. Or see tatts with no meanings. That one rocks
Braziliangirl, love it too - nice way of putting that phrase lol
MrsK2B (I believe it's MrsK now? lol) - take more pictures when healed

Everyone has lovely tats. Ginger, I must say, your tattoos are so vivid and crisp! Very nice!
Thanks for posting white tattoo pics. The hearts are vey cool. I also have a round scar on my leg and contemplated covering it with a white tattoo, too, with one other color in it. Or just doing an outline of something in white. I am extremely Nicole Kidman fair.
'Kay, I'm fascinated with tats, but have none (and way too chicken to acquire any! ), and am so curious as to why white tats would only show up on pale skin. Why is this? I would've thought that white would show up best on darker skin tones. ???

It's not just white ink that shows up better, all color shows up better, because pale skin is more transparent. My husband says that white ink might show on darker skin, but will yellow over time. I have really fair skin and my white tattoo has healed to like a pinkish cream color. It looks like a scar on me.

Tattoo ink isn't really "opaque", as you might think in the sense that it'll cover stuff up, but it's kind of a bit more transparent. That's why the bright colors (reds, oranges, etc.) show up BRIGHT BRIGHT BRIGHT on pale people such as myself (lol) and darker on the darker skin tones (although still very beautiful!) White is such a light color when it comes to tattoo ink...so it really just gets lost on darker skin tones.
The way the guys at my work explain it is that tattoos are like stained glass windows. That's why if you have a...red heart tattoo, let's say...that you don't like and want it covered up. If it's dark, you're pretty limited to color options...blacks, purples, maybeeee some dark blues and greens if the red is faded enough...you have to picture the colors LAYERING on top of themselves, not just covering up something. Whatever is underneath will always show through unless the top layer is darker. When it comes to white, even if there's nothing underneath previously (as white will not cover anything, it's too light), if your skin tone is much darker than the white, the white won't show...because you're essentially looking at your stained glass "window" through the white AND your skin tone.
I hope that makes sense!
(just fyi...I know I said on here somewhere I left the shop...but long story short, I'm back! I'm a receptionist and we get this white question a lot )
I love everyone's tats! They are beautiful! I just love tattoos and they are like potato chips. My first was when I was 35 and have gone a bit crazy since then. Tats are not for everyone. In my former life I was a prison guard and saw some crazy tats on those inmates. One had F YOU in block letters across his forehead (it was all spelled out of course). Picture him asking "Would you like fries with that?"
I love mine and here are pics of a couple:
Newest one on right lower leg. It wraps around the whole calf. This is a cover up of my first (and ugly) butterfly just above my ankle bone.
Tramp stamp but I love it and the colors.
Hubbys newest one:
And I am looking to get something like this on my ribcage down to my upper thigh. But realistic and not cartoony with cherry blossom branches wrapping around my front and back:

I'm so jealous of everybody!! I have every tattoo I want planned out, but I can't get them because I have auto-immune problems.
I really want to get my grandma's maiden tattooed on my right wrist, then get "death before dishonor" in Japanese right beneath it.
On the top of my left arm, I want to get my family seal so it looks like its carved out of stone, then I want to get Japanese styled water rushing around it/through it/etc with cherry blossom petals floating down the water.
I have three tattoos This one on the inner part of my left wrist (so it can be covered by a watch for work) IMAG0390 by ktroe, on Flickr
A green four leaf clover outline with a yellow star around it on my right hip bone - I hate this one and want it covered...it looks like someone took a crayon and drew on me.
A purple star with four smaller teal and purple shooting stars (the lines for the 'shooting' part are teal) coming out of it on my lower back, I also hate this one because it ALSO looks like someone took a crayon and drew on me. Designing a Tiger Lily (my favorite flower) with some tribal leaves/vines behind it to cover this one.
The last two I got when I was 18, and I loved them until a few years ago when I realized I'd wasted my money on a tattoo in a college town. The first one I still love, but it was done kind of poorly as you can see in the picture above. Some lettering is thicker, the 'i' is really thin...I've actually been thinking for a while about 'moving' that tattoo to the left side of my rib cage, under my arm where a bra strap/swimsuit could cover it and covering the wrist one with a peacock feather that would only cover that part of my wrist. I love the colors and pattern
So,I want to get back to London this next winter (still very much up in the air,as I don't know if my husband will let me travel alone lol),and I really want to get a tattoo there.I want a cherry blossom branch under my right breast. So,my dear girls from London, which studio is the one to pick? There are just too many and it's confusing lol

BTW, my sis in an excellent artist and has an interest in designing tats, but definitely *not* becoming a tat artist. Is there much opportunity for making designs, either "general" designs or commission work?

This might be a dumb question, but is Yelp in countries other than the U.S.? A LOT of our customers find us on Yelp. We are very proud of our Yelp status (high ratings, yay!) and in this day and age with technology at everyone's fingertips, people are now going to the internet to search for places to eat, hang out at, and even get tattooed at, rather than just using word of mouth. The internet is somewhat anonymous, so you get fairly honest reviews of places. So...I'd either try Yelp (if you have it...again, not sure if it's just a U.S. thing or not) or search for tattoo studio reviews in the area online. Look for good reviews, and then when you've narrowed a few down, check them out online. Most of the "better" shops, in my experience, have websites with portfolios that you can look at. That way, you don't have to go to the shop beforehand so it saves you time and energy. You'll be looking for clean, sharp, even lines, and obviously, just a general, good-looking tattoo. If you want color, check for bright colors (not faded or uneven) as well. Heck, check for those things even if you DON'T want color...it shows they know what they're doing. Tattooing is MUCH different from just drawing on paper, which is what many people don't realize. Once you think you have it narrowed down to the shop or a few shops, go and visit them. The atmosphere should make you feel relaxed and comfortable. If you feel harassed at all, LEAVE! Every tattoo is important, whether it be a small tiny Roman numeral or a huge, Japanese-style backpiece...and a good shop should treat you no different. Obviously, the shop should look clean to the naked eye-if it doesn't, then they sure as heck aren't operating things clean behind the counters, either. I'm not familiar with the tattoo laws overseas, but I know here in the U.S. we need to have every piece of equipment touched by the client and the artist covered with some sort of disposable wrap. We also need single-use needles that go into a correctly-disposed of sharps container, and all pieces that are reused (the tubes that the needles go in to hold them to the machine) are put through an autoclave that is tested every month to make sure it kills the required amount of spores (read-sterilizes and gets rid of ickies from other people so you don't get anything). These are all questions you can ask the staff there at the shop...Do they use single use, one client only needles? Do they put all reusable parts through a regularly-tested autoclave? Even if it ISN'T the law in writing, usually a good shop will do it anyway (creepy to think that people used to reuse needles!). GOOD LUCK!

Hmm, this is a tough call. At my shop, as well as many other shops I've visited, we do custom work, meaning the tattoo artist draws up the image themselves and tattoos it on the client. No one tattoo is ever the same, even if two separate people come in on separate days and occasions asking for the same thing (let's say a rose...the artist will always draw TWO separate roses, which means the leaves might be placed differently, he might make the colors a bit differently, the shading might be different). The only exception to this would be if we had two clients that ask specifically for the same tattoo (maybe if a mother and daughter came in both wanting the SAME rose as a bonding experience...in that case, the artist will draw up one tattoo and make two stecils, so they both have identical ones).
The drawings of pictures for tattoo use is called "flash drawings". You can google "flash tattoo work" or similar and find pre-drawn tattoo pictures. Flash is also what you see on tattoo walls in those giant picture frames. Some shops have this available for clients to "point and choose" for their tattoos. Some don't. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about it to really guide your sister in a direction. I DO know that if it's a custom shop, they probably would not be in need of her services, since the artists there already draw up all of the work. I would probably start by googling and finding various flash tattoo sites, and maybe see if she can get in contact with the people running those sites, asking them how they get their flash they sell and if she could have an opportunity at creating some. From my understanding, those sites let people buy the pictures so they can print them out and bring them to their shop to get tattooed on them. Some shops will do this...just make a stencil of the image and then tattoo them directly on the client. Some will want to re-draw the whole thing anyway. Another thing to consider is if they are larger designs, you usually have to take into consideration where on the body it will be located, as this can affect the design due to the natural curvature of the body. This gets difficult with flash, since you never know where on the body the image will go. For smaller pieces, however, it should be ok.

White is such a light color when it comes to tattoo ink...so it really just gets lost on darker skin tones.
I just finally noticed your explanation. It was much better than mine!
Lol! I just wanted to respond (because I just finally saw this, too ) because I definitely don't want to undermine your husband, because he brings up a good point that I forgot to mention in my explanation...white ink DOES tend to yellow over time! It's different for everyone, of course...just depends how your body reacts to it, how often you're in the sun, etc...but it is something to think about when considering a white tattoo.
Thanks so much for the info on "flash drawings" and custom-work. Totally makes sense to me that the actual person doing the tats would do the artwork, too.

Oh, cool! You are such a lucky lady...I would be hounding my man day and night for new tattoos if I was married to an artist, haha!

Oh, that is great! I'm so glad Yelp is helping you out! And you know, that is what finding the perfect artist is all about...finding that someone who does work that just sings to you. It's much like rings, isn't it? Hehehe
I did hound him for awhile, but he's so busy I feel bad making him tattoo me in his free time. We have a vacation in a couple of weeks, I was thinking maybe I could get him to do something then.

Yeah, I understand...the guys at the shop I work at are all so busy, and they find it hard to get their girlfriends/wives in for some new work! That sounds like a great plan...what are you going to get?
Not sure yet. He drew a ladybug to represent my youngest daughter recently. We talked about putting it on my foot. I'm not sure I'm brave enough to do that though. lol

All the 3d ones elf or just the 'piano' one? I love the 3d look. I don't LIKE the piano one, but I am extremely impressed with the talent of the artist.
I've never seen them in person Dana. But, I would love to.

The tattoo board on Pinterest is one of my favorites! I am creeped out by the carving picture a little, but more so curious. I never knew that type of tattooing existed.
