Anthropomorphism has a long history in art, literature, and to some extent science.
We know rings are just metal and gemstones, when we form an emotional connection to inanimate objects, we tend to start attributing human characteristics to them.
It's how we connect and identify with rings, cars, animals, even plants...
It's not that silly really.
It's no mistake that rings have a "head" and "shoulders" and that they have names as industry standard. Hehe. I just posted something similar to what you said here, KJMM. But you are much more concise about it!

This could get confusing. We'll have 2 in college at the same time so I need to name my truck Hope as well.
If DD gets a full scholarship I'm going to name the scholarship Figi Vacation. Bwahahaaaa!!! LOL if you feel that emotionally connected to her scholarship you can. "I'm going to spend $1000 of Fiji Vacation to buy a laptop, a $1500 of Figi Vacation on textbooks, $30,000.00 of Figi Vacation on tuition..." LOL But then following the logic shouldn't the laptop have a name? I was joking =P

Now I have that song "Head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes" stuck in my head. LOL bwahahahaha "Eyes and ears and mouth and nose! Heads shoulder's Knees and Toes, knees and toes" Hahahhaha! Now I am singing! I started cracking up when I read this post,.as the one I was writing on BEFORE this one,..I wrote "it" and I went back and changed it to "her." LOL!! Well I say "her or she" because there is no way my rings are a boy!! They are girly. hahaha And I would NEVER have named a ring,..till I came here!! I named my work of art that I designed with DK cuz she was so special and I have never had a ring with that much work involved in one before. And I wanted to name her after one of my favorite roos. BellaRoo. NOW,..just so you KNOW,..ALL my family thinks I am NUTS that I named her,..and call a ring a SHE!! So dont worry Vanilla,..my mom even thinks I belong in the nut house for doing this!! Truth is,..I am just having fun. Thats what it is for me,.. and to have my ring named after "someone" that is extremely important to me. Speaking of....my Peachy Pink is suppose to be here today.. And so that BellaRoo's best friend Juliet is not jealous,. I HAVE to name the ring after her. Juliets nickname is "DivaRoo" So DivaRoo is on the UPS truck now...lol Gads,.I am crazy. Where has Eleanore been?? I miss her,..she is crazier than me!! lol

Good question, VB. I've seen it so often that I don't even think twice about it. I heard the word "she" referring to rings, cars, boats, bbq grills, and TVs - "isn't she a beauty?" Here's what I've observed - they are quasi-luxury items usually purchased with disposable income, and are not physically attached to the ground, the house, a wall, etc. All of the above items mentioned can be picked up and moved. You cannot take it with you if you moved to a new house. If you installed a marble counter top in a kitchen, it's an "it" versus a "she". My guess is that these things become your "baby". The $ money you put it in to it, and the pleasure it gives you makes you want to care for it like you do a child. It starts to take on human qualities in your mind. In the old days, females were to be protected as they were considered vulnerable. So maybe attributing the word "she", or a giving an object a name, justifies the protective care we take of these objects. You know, the obsession of polishing of a car 2x a week, rinsing your rings in bottled water, or a personal example, my husband patting our Weber grill after bbq-ing and saying, "she's been a great work-horse." Just some thoughts on that - or I'm the crazy one! I was going to say, well said, MGR!!!!!!

This is a little off subject, sort of....but when DD was younger she made our family on her Sims game. She would tell us all about what 'we' were doing and sometimes their lives were more interesting than ours. So one day the sim dad went into the attic and lit a rocket and started a fire. DD called us frantically as she tried to get the fire department but it was too late. He died in the fire. The sim family mourned and we were all surprised to find that we were all sad too. It was completely bizarre. I wanted to get remarried to a rich hottie but DD stopped playing with our family before I got the chance. Again, it was completely bizarre how attached we all got to our sim selves.
