Why do people refer to rings/stones as "she"? It seems so odd to me. Jewelry is an inanimate object not a person.

Every time I see it on the boards I go crazy LOL

Is this something that's been going on for a long time and I just missed the boat or is a new trend that's recently started up? Is it peculiar to this board or do people talk about their jewelry in this manner on other boards too?

I'm perplexed. LOL

Some people, in general, name or refer to objects as if it were a person. I don't think it's exclusive to this board or jewelry, you just might come across it more frequently because it is a jewelry forum. I have nicknames for my car, shoes, some jewelry and other things and will refer to them as "she" at times. I think it's more of a personality/humor thing.

I don't know. I understand emotional attachments but I don't generally call my jewelry 'she'or give them names. I don't assign a gender or name to the furniture or my favorite cooking pots or my shoes either. I also don't name my cars but my dad named his cars girl names and called them she. I don't get that either. LOL

I guess I could give it a try.

I'm going to name my car Hope. I hope she lives until the kids are done with college!! grin

I'm going to name my wedding ring Percy. I persevered 20 years of marriage to get her. grin

My original diamond (now in a pendant) shall be Anima, because she is always close to my heart. grin

That's not too bad...but I don't think it will stick. LOL.

Anthropomorphism has a long history in art, literature, and to some extent science.

We know rings are just metal and gemstones, when we form an emotional connection to inanimate objects, we tend to start attributing human characteristics to them.

It's how we connect and identify with rings, cars, animals, even plants...

It's not that silly really.

It's no mistake that rings have a "head" and "shoulders" and that they have names as industry standard.

heheh yep i am guilty of naming my car, and im sure ill name my ring...

id definitely agree that having an emotional attachment is the key influence to naming something..

its funny how many ppl do it tho, even irl i know of lots of ppl that assign names to inanimate objects..

LOL if you feel that emotionally connected to her scholarship you can.

"I'm going to spend $1000 of Fiji Vacation to buy a laptop, a $1500 of Figi Vacation on textbooks, $30,000.00 of Figi Vacation on tuition..."

Whatever works...
