Good question, VB. I've seen it so often that I don't even think twice about it. I heard the word "she" referring to rings, cars, boats, bbq grills, and TVs - "isn't she a beauty?"

Here's what I've observed - they are quasi-luxury items usually purchased with disposable income, and are not physically attached to the ground, the house, a wall, etc. All of the above items mentioned can be picked up and moved. You cannot take it with you if you moved to a new house. If you installed a marble counter top in a kitchen, it's an "it" versus a "she".

My guess is that these things become your "baby". The $ money you put it in to it, and the pleasure it gives you makes you want to care for it like you do a child. It starts to take on human qualities in your mind.

In the old days, females were to be protected as they were considered vulnerable. So maybe attributing the word "she", or a giving an object a name, justifies the protective care we take of these objects. You know, the obsession of polishing of a car 2x a week, rinsing your rings in bottled water, or a personal example, my husband patting our Weber grill after bbq-ing and saying, "she's been a great work-horse." grin

Just some thoughts on that - or I'm the crazy one! After all, I've named the rings in one set, Contessa & Marchesa. crazy <-- there you go, VB, the crazy face, in honor of you. grin

I couldn't agree more. Also you never know how much someone had to go through to get that object that they have developed their emotional attachment too. For my rings its just a fun thing to do, same with my cars but for my laptop, I received it through a scholarship and it was the difference between me living at the library and being able to do homework in my dorm. I am the only child in my family to go to college. I received a full ride and had to work hard to keep that ride, and Neef helped me, so even when "she" crashed and burned, I kept her in the case, and she rests in peace in the back of my closet....sheesh sign me up for the looney bin

Oh man, I just thought of something else. My first sewing machine. She didn't have a name but I called her 'she'. When she finally needed more repair than she was worth it was very hard for me to go buy a replacement.

I got that machine when I started high school. I made 80's style floral dresses with wide white collars, leg warmers for me and my friends from old sweaters, fabric pillow frames, boat necked tops and stuffed letters for my bed. I use it to sew accessories for my wedding. I made baby clothes and nursery bedding for my kids on that machine...halloween costumes and doll clothes as they got older. I had made pillows, curtains, cushions and slipcovers for our home, taken in and hemmed pants, sewed flower girl dresses for DD and a niece for my BIL's wedding. So many fond memories were attached to that machine...she was my partner in all of those memories.

I can't think of any 'thing' that I have ever been attached to like that and it didn't make sense to me rationally.
I eventually gave in and bought a new machine...but it's still not the same. Weird.

My car has a name, Anastasia, it's fun and silly. My sons and I call our remote Waldo so when it's lost we can ask, "Where's Waldo?" lol

The only thing I've ever named and called 'he' or 'she' has been my pets. The real live animal type.

EXCEPT... there was one stuffed animal, a bunny in a dress, and my friends and I named her Priscilla. We were 20-ish, we stole her from my mom, and we took photos of her in multiple dangerous situations and delivered them one by one with ransom notes for cookies, fudge, etc. We wrapped her dress in the boat motor propeller, put her in a doll chair in front of a car exhaust pipe, and lots more. My favorite was when we tied her loosely to a ceiling fan and then turned on the fan so that she was flying outward from it in the picture. My mom played along marvelously, by the way. We ate very well.

I'm sorry, my Priscilla photos are tucked in a closet in a box of 35mm prints from the 80s. And I don't have a scanner -- shocking but true. You'll just have to close your eyes and imagine the scenes knowing that it really was *that* funny.
