Hahahha, I was WRONG!
1991 was when thousands of Russians were finally able to leave the USSR. Early 90's was also a time when many people started leaving South Africa in droves. In fact, it became known as the decade of "the brain drain" as thousands of doctors, lawyers, and highly educated people started leaving the country for the US, Europe and Australia. I live in a small town in the Southern US, and you would be amazed at how many South African doctors and lawyers there are in town!!! That's interesting. My small town had an influx around that time of extremely well to do folks from S. Africa. I had no idea why, though. That makes sense.

I have a doctorate in English Literature. I taught for a long time; then it got to be too much for me with my health condition. I went to part time--then to an editing job--then to retirement. I miss the young people, but I have my books. Now, I stay at home and for the most part, I'm very happy. Having a good marriage helps when one is going through health issues and hardships. I wish all my sparkly sisters happy in their choice of profession.

I'm sorry to hear about your health issues; I wish you well! I hear you on having your books to keep you company. Books are how I got through my childhood as a bit of a loner. Do you find the smell of old and familiar books comforting too? I do.
I most certainly do! I doubled in college and got a BA in English Lit and a BFA in Dance. Books saved me from myself soooooo many times. I'll never convert to an e-reader because I need to smell the books!

I'll never convert to an e-reader because I need to smell the books! OMG same here! After I moved recently, all my books went in to storage (1000's of them) and my husband, trying to avoid the heavy lifting, suggested we buy a tab and try out the kindle app. I hated it! It was hard to explain that I needed the smell LOL! I downloaded a few cannon books and didn't get through a few pages of Jane Austen.

I'll never convert to an e-reader because I need to smell the books! +1 I do have a Kindle though, me and my daughter both got one for the homeschooling - made it a bit easier for going places and not having to cart a bunch of books. Growing up we had a library in our home. I used to love going in there and sitting with my mom to read with a cup of Earl Grey tea. To this day every time I sit with a book to read I start to crave a cuppa!

Eleanore! I have a BA in English Literature with an emphasis on Critical Theory! I attended UCI and Cambridge. It was my dream to get my doctorate in English Lit and I wanted to teach, but...I ended up going into finance because it makes more money and I'm the head of household (I keep a stay-at-home father and support two young children). I can't say I don't love my career now too, but I hope maybe after I send my kids to college I can go back for my PhD and hopefully teach.

My my friends outside my major always thought that was a strange quirk of mine that I seemed to only shared with other bibliophiles. Yes, indeed. I do love the smell of books-particularly leather bound sets that I've bought from Easton Press and antique book stores. I taught English Lit at The University of Toronto for 25 years. But, I lead a different life now. It's very peaceful and prayerful. It's my reward after all the unpleasant years of the politics and machinations of academia. I wish you good fortune in your endeavors.

and I am working on certifications and paperwork as we speak. I'm not giving up my other job yet but working in the travel industry is always something I have wanted to do.
