I always find it strange when people say: "You don't look like you come from Africa!" WTH does that mean?!?! Is it because I am white? There are millions of white people in Africa. I even had some woman ask me how I'm adjusting to wearing clothes!!! She thought we all wear skins, and go topless in darkest Africa. Peoples' ignorance astounds me........

Good thing you didn't move to Canada, eh? 'Cause we all live in igloos and it's snowy 99% of the time. You would've been re-e-e-eally cold in your skimpy nuthin's when you first arrived...

Hahahahahahaha! sparklee, I just about fell off my chair reading this. I'm only laughing because it's so ridiculously funny. I absolutely cannot believe someone actually said that to you!! Are you kidding me? With so much information available through books, e-readers, the internet, world history classes, newspapers and magazines, and TV, it's astounding how little people know about history and cultures that are not their own. Okay, so even if you didn't know the history of European settlers colonizing South Africa, or if it doesn't enter your realm of interest, the celeb rags and shows like ET/TMZ/Extra are always featuring Prince Harry's ex-love, Chelsy Davy, and Charlize Theron, both of South Africa. That alone should start some spark of reasoning. I'll never forget my college roommate, while studying for a global history test, asking me if Spain was a continent in Africa. I suppose I could have given her credit if she had been referring to 300 million years ago when the earth's only landmass consisted of Pangaea, the supercontinent. Nah, she probably thought Pangaea was a spongy Italian doughnut - from Africa.
Edited by MrsGotRocks (03/23/12 05:11 AM) Edit Reason: Pangaea comment. I had to be a comedian!

Are you kidding me? Oh my dear, that's not the half of it!!!! I've been asked if I had lions, tigers and elephants in my backyard. And if that's not ludicrous enough, said person had no idea that there are no tigers in Africa! Do we have cars in Africa, or do we still use ox wagons? Not sure if this guys was really being serious, but the questions that followed seemed to show that he was. Did I have a regular house, or did I live in a mud hut? Do I believe in Western medicine, or do I prefer the witchdoctor? One lady at the checkout of a grocery store refused to believe I was from Africa as I'm white, and she was convinced that there are no whites in Africa. I've been asked if we also had turkey on Thanksgiving. (This one always gets me!!!) This one you'll all love: "Gold and diamonds come from South Africa, do you find them lying on the sides of the street and stuff?!?!" ........ and then people wonder why I homeschool!

That alone should start some spark of reasoning. Most of this stuff happened in the early 90's before Charlize Theron was big, and Chelsy Davy was in the news. The only "celebrity" South Africans at that time that were globally known were Chris Barnard and Gary Player.

.....kangaroo's wish is my command, LOL! Soooooo, what are some dumb things people have said to you, or dumb things you've heard people say? Could be on the news, friends, neighbours, even (ulp!) yourself in a wacky moment... My sis used to live in Nova Scotia and she and her friends had lists of crazy things tourists would say. The town my sis lived in was on a tidal river, so, like clockwork, the river level would rise and fall --- with the tide. A friend's mom was visiting from Ontario and asked, most seriously, "Who pulls the plug on the river so it lowers like that?" They have scads of these kinds of crazy-tourist comments. LOL!

Sorry about that, kanga!
This one had me in tears even after the 5th time watching it. It's no longer in YouTube, but I found it here, hope you get it.
You might have to copy and paste it into your browser.
