IMO - I would save up for the real thing. Purchasing replicas of designer purses funds an illegal counterfeit business. It's one thing if you get a handbag that resembles an LV, but it's another if you're looking for something like an "exact replica" with the brand name all over it.

I totally agree. Also, there have been many news reports over the past few years regarding terrorist groups that get much of their money from selling counterfeit luxury goods. The conditions that the factory workers must endure are horrific and involve child ,slave labor.Do you really want to contribute to that ? I hope not. Save up for the real LV bag and enjoy using it with a clear conscience.

The terrorist thing is pretty much made up (probably by the authentic bag companies to scare people) and the real bags are made in China, often by the exact same workers as make the better replicas. So don't buy a luxury handbag at all if you don't want to contribute to that, or save up and buy a Hermes because they're still made in France.

Actually, that is incorrect, as the slightest bit of research will show.

Counterfeit goods linked to terrorism

Terrorist groups funding operations

Counterfeit products linked to terrorist funding

I could continue to post link after link, but if you do a cursory google search you will find plenty of proof that this is a fact.

And if that's not enough reason to NOT purchase counterfeit products, consider the working condition of those that work for these companies. The are not monitored the way the factories that are owned by the designer companies are, and cruelty and poor working conditions are rife.

I read all those articles. The first one mentioned - briefly - that the Madrid bombers resold pirated CDs to raise money, and the whole rest of the article was simply about counterfeit goods, thereby trying to link the two in your mind. The others had a lot of "might be"s and "could"s in it. So they're buying goods and reselling them... a lot of people do that, with all SORTS of things. If they sold legitimate stuff on eBay, should we shut eBay down because it's funding terrorism?

As for the factories, I'll believe the authentic companies are gentle and watching over their workers with benevolent eyes when I actually see it. At the very least, they're being paid pennies for bags that are being resold for multiple thousands of dollars. China isn't known for good working conditions, and I doubt any of them, authentic or real, have the sort of working conditions we would consider pleasant. People are willing to work there because it's better than starving out on the fields, not being paid anything at all.

Do yourself a favor and go and buy yourself this book, because it's quite evident that you've not taken the time to research your purchases.

But hey, whatever you have to do to assuage your conscience is your business.

Someone told me Diane Sawyer did a show recently where Tommy Hilfigur (?) jeans were being made in China in sweat shops for 22 cents per hour. The he sold them for $100 a pair. I suspect, but don't know for sure, that a lot of the real thing is made by the same people who make the knock-offs.

I actually don't care that much what people buy. But to say that the companies themselves aren't behind a lot of these studies is also a bit naive. Take, for example, the LV Neverfull that is the subject of this post:

Try to look at it like someone who's never heard of a luxury good before. What do you see? A tote bag.

Except that first tote, in a store, will cost you upwards of $1200, while that second one will cost you $30. What's the difference? A name. The LV one is made of coated canvas, while the Land's End one is made of uncoated canvas. The LV one does have leather handles... but come on. Leather handles and a coating aren't worth $1170 more. LV and Chanel and all those lux goods makers are working very hard to protect their name and their image, because THAT is what they're selling. In order to sell a bag for $1200 that cost them, at most $30 to make, they need to have people (especially women) see that as an exclusive item that gives them status. If the same item is being sold by the factory that makes them in China for $100 as a knockoff, that takes the luster off of their image. So they're working hard to protect it.

I personally like bags from smaller manufacturers that don't have the same "cachet" as the big lux makers. In particular, I like Michael Kors. His handbags tend to sell more reasonably, and they actually have to put effort into designing bags that are interesting and worth the money, because they don't have the same bling-bling name as Louis Vuitton or Chanel. Chanel has been selling the same bags since the... what, 1960s? Still selling for $4000, and no real need to change up the design. But to each his own. If you like those bags and want to buy them, more power to you.

A few of the studies, perhaps. But the ones that are of greater consequence to me are those that are funded by the European Commission, the US Department of Justice Task Force on Intellectual Property, and Interpol. Like I said, read the book.........

there is another book that you might want to take the time to read:

Deluxe:
How Luxury Lost its Luster

It was not funded by any of the luxury brands.
There is quite a bit of information about the time, skill and craftsmanship required to produce a Louis Vuitton bag. There are no LV factories in China, never have been.

The book also discusses the dirty business of counterfeit goods. They DO fund terrorist groups, and the factory owners do not seem to care about the way they treat their workers, including the children.

Every time anyone knowingly buys a fake anything, be it Chanel sunglasses or an LV bag, that person is condoning and contributing to a very unsavory business.
We should all care about the local and/or worldwide impact of our purchases.

I don't mind spending that much money on hand bags because the big names always guarantee their products if anything was to break they will have it fixed or replaced so in the the end the money is worth it in my eyes... I put my bags through hell I can't even remember how many times I have had a bag replaced...

I walked into a coach store one time just browsing and the sales lady noticed my bag was fraying she told me to just pick out a new bag... entering this store this was so not my intention at all...

Yes there are. I know someone who toured one. The only thing that is added onto the bags in France is the zipper toggle, which allows them to have the tag MADE IN FRANCE added.

LV do not have a factory in China. They did open a factory in India to make their shoes however, but no China.

Their other products are made all over europe.= and in the USA. The two items I have are made in Spain.

Other luxury brands like Prada DO have factories in China.

I really would just save up and get yourself an authentic LV. Yes it is expensive but it will litteraly last you a lifetime. And as someone above mentioned, they stand by their product and will always replace/recondition the items etc for you.
