awww! How did you feel having your parents crack a joke at your expense, kanga?
OMG, morning glory!!
Horrified!!! I still remember it!! lol Ummmmmm....I tell ya,..the things we do to our kids to torment them!!
i've never understood the point of that sort of thing. Well I know I am not a perfect parent for sure,...but I NEVER try the humiliation card.... They were trying to be funny,..but something I have learned with teenagers...you have to tread carefully,..because they are much more sensitive than adults. Being embarrassed it a HUGE deal to a teenager especially.....

It was a good lesson. I learned to simply observe and keep my observations to myself. Like the time I asked a lady when her baby was due, only to have her scowl at me and reply: "I'm not pregnant, but obviously you think I'm fat!"

My roomate at Uni freshman year was a very nice girl, from a small town in Pennsylvania. When I got to the dorm, and introduced myself to her yadda yadda, said I was from Brazil, she goes...Is that in Africa? I almost died. How did this girl get admitted to the same uni as me? lol.
Anyway, I've also been asked (like over 10 years ago) if we had cars in Brasil now....I said no, we don't, we go around town in horses! HAH!

Here's one on me - I was not a huge sports fan until I had kids and they started playing sports. So when we were first married, I remembered watching college basketball on TV with my hubby. The camera zoomed in on two fans, one holding a capital letter "D", and the other holding a picture of a picket fence, as in "D-fence = Defense". I said to DH, "I don't get it. What does D-gate have to do with basketball?" He said, "You're kidding, right?" It took a while to convince him that I was not joking.

Don't feel bad, I did the same thing when we first came to this country and we were watching a football game with our neighbors. How the heck was I supposed to know it was a fence and not a gate?!?! It looks like a gate, right?!?!?! My husband thought it was hysterical............

Hoyden's experiences remind me of my sister as she trains Guide Dogs for the Blind in the UK.
She was at the checkout with the latest young dog she was training and the checkout girl said to my sister "I see you have a guide dog, when are you going blind?"
People say the funniest things! OMG - I would have all I could do to keep my mouth shut at that one! There are days when I feel like I brush my teeth and sharpen my tongue before I set out for the day. Years of physical therapy and gate training have taken care to the limp I used to have, so people don't really "see" my disability unless it's a bad day for me. One guy said to me, "You don't look handicapped to me!" My then 7 year old daughter immediately responded, "You don't look stupid to me, but looks can be deceiving." I was MORTIFIED! OMG, this entire thread has me in TEARS from laughing so hard... but this has to be the BEST!!! I wouldn't have been mortified, I'd have been a PROUD MAMMA!! LOL

Being from Hawaii, we get tons of tourists and tons of comments that will make you scratch your head.
Once, I was talking to my friend's cousin from Virginia and he asked whether or not we wear grass skirts to school. o_O
Another one was this: would they need a passport to come to Hawaii from California.
And another one was this: "I bet you know my friend. There's gotta be like one or two high schools in Hawaii right?"
And the best one: "So like, have you been to the island of Waikiki?"
O_O LOL, seriously? I'm about to move to HI, but I'd never dream of assuming that kind of crap. Tourists... they call it "tourist season", so why can't we shoot them? lol. Once upon a time, a friend and I were living/working in a tourist town in the mountains in Alberta. A tourist came up to my friend and asked her "At what elevation do your deer turn into elk?" She asked for clarification, and the woman said her and her husband were going hiking later that day, and they read in a guide book that at a such and such elevation, deer "become" elk... they wanted to go sit on a rock at that elevation and watch them "morph" into a new animal. LMBO. Her guide book was talking about how "deer live at or under this elevation... and elk live above that elevation"... but NOTHING about MORPHING ANIMALS. That same week, from the same tour group, someone asked me if this tourist magnet would stick on their fridge. I asked, "Is your fridge METAL?!?" They replied that it was. I said, "Then yes." Their response was,"Are you sure? Because of the reverse polarity between Canada and the US, I'm not sure..." This happened all the time, and it was ALWAYS a new tour group from the exact same town in the US (we know because they were always sure to tell us, they were so proud of their town). I'm not going to name the town, lest I offend anyone from there... but I'm hoping in the last 10 years, some of the smarter people from that town have started taking vacations. LOL! Seriously? I think tourists just turn their brains off for their vacation. They can't really be as stupid as we've all had to deal with. Can they? LOL!

I don't watch sports (DH is more of a gamer than a sports nut, so I'm spared thankfully)... so I've never seen this. But I don't think I would have understood this either. We don't have a lot of picket fences here... so maybe that's why? It would have looked like a gate to me as well. LOL.
