My DH and I were mtn. biking one day and I went back to the van early, with our wee terrier. The trails were super technical with unforgiving granite---great traction, poor to take a header onto...

DH rode some more, then I noticed he was coming back on the road. Walking. Hmm. Thought at first he had a mechanical failure, but it turned out he'd injured himself in a spectacular landing failure. He was looking queasy and said it hurt to breathe. Thought he'd maybe popped a lung (well, punctured it...) although he'd not hit anything.

I asked which lung he thought it was and he indicated the left one. I asked how he knew, and he said he could feel a bit of heaviness in that side and it was difficult to take a deep breath, as well a painful.

When I was a kid, I used to love exhaling on cold windows to watch my breath steam up the window and then slowly evaporate. So, in my great wisdom-of-the-moment, I heard myself saying something that even as it was coming out of mouth, I knew was wrong. "Well, plug one nostril and see how much air comes out..." eek blush

DH was certain I was trying to kill him 'cause it really hurt to laugh, breathe, etc. His retort, "Stop it. You're trying to kill me... [voice fading to a whisper]" And then I couldn't stop laughing. To this day, we get fits of giggles about it. Blessed is the medical system that I didn't go into medicine... blush laugh

Turns out it he did tear the lung by virtue of the severity of the smack-down landing on his left side. The sheer force of the hit caused the tissue to tear! eek Fortunately, after releasing the air and staying close to immobile, he healed well.

I could go on and on listing various ignorant questions and comments people have made, but I'll just list a quick couple of funny ones (not really "ignorant", but just silly or funny).

Many many years ago I worked at Subway (the sandwich shop), where we sold subs in two sizes: 6 inch and footlong. I had a couple of people ask me how big the footlong was. laugh

Recently I attended a "get to know you" for some of the newer members of a moms' club I belong to (the name of the group even is called "___ moms' club"). I attended without my son because he was in preschool in order to socialize with the moms. One of the newer members, as part of the small talk, asked me, "do you have any children?" laugh

And the foot long!!!

So a friend was over and while she was petting my mammoth donkey,.
she says to me "You should paint her!"

Me "Well she is dark brown,..so I dont know how any color would actually show up on her?? Hmmm wonder how I would do that?"

Friends looks at me and start laughing with tears..
"you dummy!! Paint a portrait of your Donkey!! You know!! You PAINT remember??"

One lady at the checkout of a grocery store refused to believe I was from Africa as I'm white, and she was convinced that there are no whites in Africa.

I've been asked if we also had turkey on Thanksgiving. (This one always gets me!!!)

This one you'll all love: "Gold and diamonds come from South Africa, do you find them lying on the sides of the street and stuff?!?!"

........

Okay, I am choking with laughter now.

Personally, I'd prefer the witchdoctor. He gets right to it, and doesn't have to wait around while we try to get approval from insurance. ;-D

Being from Hawaii, we get tons of tourists and tons of comments that will make you scratch your head.

Once, I was talking to my friend's cousin from Virginia and he asked whether or not we wear grass skirts to school. o_O

Another one was this: would they need a passport to come to Hawaii from California.

And another one was this: "I bet you know my friend. There's gotta be like one or two high schools in Hawaii right?"

And the best one: "So like, have you been to the island of Waikiki?"

O_O
