I had to ship my EC diamond to have my 3-stone made and spoke to both Fedex and UPS. With those carriers I would've been required to get separate insurance which was very expensive. The jewelers recommended USPS, so I sent it Priority Mail, registered with a declared value of $9000. It cost me just a little under $40 and my diamond got to them in 2 days.
I just recently sent another diamond to Images, and used the same method. Got to them in 2 days.
USPS Priority, registered would be my recommendation.

Thanks guys. I guess everyone has a bad and good experience with this one or that one. DK suggested I send with Fedex or UPS with Signature required. I might do Fedex, insured. USPS I have had issues in the past a few times with my mobiles. Of course those are $100, not 5000 And yes, their insurance claim takes foreeeeeeeeeeeeeeever.

DK suggested I send with Fedex or UPS with Signature required. I might do Fedex, insured. When I called Fedex about shipping my diamond, they told me they do not insure jewelry over $500, and that I would have to get the insurance through my own company, or through my homeowners. ...... and see here.

DK probably has insurance for jewelry he mails out with Fedex. You as an individual will have to get your own, and trust me, it can be pricy!
I have never had a problem with shipping items through USPS. My items have always got to the destination when sent registered. The only issue is tracking, but to me that's not a big deal. If you really NEED to know where it is at all times, go with the notify by email option, or you can call the 800-number and they will tell you where it is. If you send it Priority and Registered it will get there in 2-3 days. No worries.......
