Less, in a previous post, some time ago, I joked that you would be retiring to a tropical island and now it seems that you've actually picked one out!
Can you clear up some confusion that I'm having regarding be able to order and pick up Amora gems at your offices in Issaquah? There was much discussion about that back on pg. 18. Am I correct in understanding that we can purchase Amoras when they are available, our billing address doesn't matter, and we can PICK THEM UP? Is that a legal way to avoid the patent restrictions on shipping within the U.S.
If so, there seem to be many of us who would be ready, willing and able to do that.
Please let us know if that is possible! My avatar ring is waiting for her Amora Krupps cut! Yoohoo! Is there anyone on DB who can answer the question I posted yesterday regarding all the "pick up" discussion back on pg. 18 of this blog? Pretty please? Are you talking about this: Here's an alternative idea to mail forwarding for Canadians, since I didn't realize that BTD is in Washington.
Are we allowed to drive across the border and pick up a stone from the BTD office in person? I don't know exactly where in Washington it's located, but if it's anywhere near the border for mainland BC or Seattle (Yay Clipper ferry from Victoria!), I would be ALL for doing that. We are in Issaquah, Washington about 20 minutes from Seattle. For comparison, its about 2.5 hours drive on I-405 to get to Vancouver, BC. You can do a pickup if you schedule it ahead of time. We are not in a retail store but rather an office building just off of I-90. We are not allowed to have customers into our offices proper (due to theft/robbery risk) but we can leave items with the front desk staff for the building and you can sign for it that way... Anyway, I have gone up to Vancouver BC and back in the same day so it is a doable trip as long as the border crossing is not backed up. Our computer servers are located in British Columbia right now actually. @NikkiKeith - you are thinking of Washington DC and not Washington state Best regards Less
This is excellent to know for when Amora comes out; my best friend and I are both dying for one so we may have to make a road trip! How would that work out for billing purposes though? Like does the patent make it so that Canadian customers can't even order, or does it just prevent it from being sent into the country?
Per our patent attorney, its the shipping address that matters. We will not be allowed to ship to any country currently under patent coverage as that would be exporting/importing it into a restricted area. So, it's basically like taxes where the destination determines the coverage. Hope that helps, Less I would also like some clarification on this issue. It seems odd to me that one could legally pick up the Amora from the US without violating the patent restrictions simply because one's "shipping" address is in another country.

It seems odd to me that one could legally pick up the Amora from the US without violating the patent restrictions simply because one's "shipping" address is in another country. From my understanding, this conversation was about picking up an Amora Gem when the patent gets invalidated in the United States, with the patent not being invalidated in Canada yet. Someone from Canada could drive across the border to pick up a stone they purchased online and bring it back into their country, but BTD could not ship it across the border to a patent protected country. So if the patent is invalidated in Canada prior to it being invalidated in the USA, then a US citizen could go and pick one up across the border in Canada and bring it back to the USA, but could not purchase one in the USA and pick it up at BTD headquarters, as that would still be selling in a patent protected country. I do not believe you can pick up a stone in a patent protected country period, it either has to be sent to a non patent protected country and either mail forwarded or picked up person there.

Quick quesiton Less.. Also, there were a number of requests to consider adding two tone rings for the Regal ring among others. We are working on that. Our current caster only casts exclusively high temp metals (platinum and palladium) but they have referred us to another caster for the yellow gold work. Thus, if we can duplicate our master molds and send those over, we'll be able to offer it in another month. If you do end up working with the yellow gold caster, will that mean that more of your rings will become available in two tone as well as in yellow gold?
