I will add that I have noticed that overall on many boards, people like to have the chance to cast judgment even if the topic is not really relevant to their answer.

There is a "is an upgrade still called an ering?" type-post on the bee right now, and the number of people who have jumped in and say "I would NEVER upgrade or change my ring, it is the one my FI picked out all on his own and gave me - a new one would would not mean anything to me" is a bit eye-rolling. I just want to say, um, great, but the question was not "would you change you upgrade your ring?" or "how do you feel about upgrades?"!

I do belong to several other boards, that cover many topics, and I find the vibe ebbs and flows. Many other boards are pretty great too, and I just take (temporary to permanent) breaks when things get a bit "too much" for me. It tends to change with new influxes of members for a bit, before it goes back to regulars again, etc.

Wedding boards can be particularly bad, I have noticed! Some seem to think they are on an episode of Four Weddings and have been asked to critique everyone elses choices, ha ha. Some of them just seem to get sucked into the materialism or buy into whatever the industry has told them, like "diamonds are an investment and anything else is just trying to be a diamond!".

The it wouldn't mean anything to me makes me LOL because my upgrade means a lot to my husband! It was a lot of money so ya it's gonna mean something! But of course these are new brides, I prolly woulda said the same 12 years ago in my righteousness!

It is funny how people will respond to the upgrade issue, saying they will never upgrade their ring, it is the one their man picked all on his own for them, yada, yada... Until they get stuck with a ring they would never have picked out for themselves.

Brides are a phenomenon... Normal women can turn into their worst nightmare when a wedding is in the future. It amazes me to read the responses some brides will put out on wedding boards, as if the world revolved around them, and the worst part is that they do believe it. Yikes!

Yup, I loved my princess diamond in the yellow gold back then and it was my forever ring, until it no longer fit due to pregnancy and the world of upgrades opened to me.... I then changed weddimg sets once a year!

Yup. I also see some will say "it is not what I would have picked out but the sentiment matters and he would be so hurt if I wanted to change it so I never will change it". Then on another thread they admit if they lost theirs they would get an entirely different looking ring with the insurance money. So much for "never wanting to change it". You do, you just won't until you have no other choice, or have an excuse to change it, ha ha.

I agree re brides (in general but not all!).I sometimes wonder how I managed to get married at all given how lacksadaiscal I was about anything wedding related. Fortunately my husband took the lead putting ours together. Apparently we are still somehow married despite not having monogrammed napkins and double enveloped invitations. Ha ha.

It's funny, because I used to be a bit of a diamond snob (never having actually owned one) - oh it must be "real" and it must be at least a carat etc.

But I realised that there are so many other things you can do with $20,000 and it all seemed a bit of a waste. I know people who took out mortgages for their rings and I'm pretty sure they're no happier for it - probably more unhappy.

Especially when the Amora gem comes out - which I'm hanging for - why would you wear an overpriced thing you have to take ridiculous care of, controlled by a cartel which may be involved child slave labour in the sourcing??

NO THANKS!

I find it hilarious when they present their perfect stone or ring, how they start by thanking a whole list of people like at the academy awards smile
