Some people feel bad for Kate Middleton, because she didn't get to have any say in her ring, and it is a sapphire...and she would probably have preferred a diamond. *eyeroll* I think Kate Middleton is lovely, but I cannot bring myself to feel bad for her because she married a prince and got a sapphire instead of a diamond, lol.

They may also feel sorry for Kate because she didn't get a ring from the royal family cache of jewels. Yes, it was Diana's ring, who married into the royal family, but it was "new" ring (albeit created by Asprey & Garrard) that had no prior royal provenance or history, and wasn't chosen with input nor care from Charles. It was somewhat cold the way a tray of rings was brought to Diana and she was told to chose one for her engagement ring. I think I might've liked that! By contrast, Camilla's art deco ring formerly belonged to the Queen Mother, and is considered a precious heirloom. It was chosen and given to her by Charles, the ring belongs to her, and is not just borrowed for ceremonious occasions. What that implies is that Diana and Kate were not considered worthy enough or trustworthy enough (read: a little too common) by the royal family to bestowed with family jewels, and that Camilla is accepted by the Queen. But since Diana and her sons obviously had a loving relationship and the fact that William thoughtfully wanted Kate to have his mother's ring, it now has a new sentiment and provenance.** I find Camilla's EC to be very dark, like she baked it one too many times! lol As much as I love ECs, I'll take Kate's ring over Camilla's. ** Although wouldn't it be funny if 10 years from now, Kate started thinking about an upgrade? There are a lot of threads that start out with "I received my MILs ring for my engagement ring when we first got married. Now that I'm older and wiser and we are celebrating our 10th anniversary..."

Yup! ^_^ I could work myself up to having a sad if she even uttered those words, which has about as much of a chance of happening as me delivering her baby. People speculating that she MIGHT be sad she didn't get a diamond is just silly.

Yup, I agree that is where some of the background about "feeling sorry" for her come from. She got a ring that was chosen by Diana from a tray because she was not "deserved" enough to get one of the royal jewels. People seem to focus on that. But, the sapphire is stunning and who knows what she thinks of it herself? No one, as far as I can recollect, has actually asked Kate! It is a pretty famous ring (for good and bad at this point) and sapphires and such are FAR more common in the UK then they are in North America (and hers is a massive ring for that locale anyway). My great grandmother, grandmother had blue sapphires as was the "norm" from their background. I had a sapphire before switching it up too.

She just married a prince, me thinks she's ok either way! Not that I would want that life for myself.... The financial independence like hers, yes, the actual life, no thanks! (oooh, I hit 2000 posts! Hehe! With that, I bid you goodnight )

Yup, I am not so much into the being followed and having people look at my stomach to decide if I am "showing" or not and make comments on whether I am starting to "produce heirs" especially since I am child free....that would be a lot of years of "is she or isn't she" like with Jennifer Aniston. "Damn it, I just ate a lot of cucumber tea sandwiches, leave me alone!". Ha ha.

Do we know that Kate did or did not have a say in the ring? Like many modern engaged couples they may well have discussed the ring options before actually becoming engaged. I don't recall if Diana was offered any of the royal jewelry for engagement, only that she picked her own ring and that it was not custom made for her. That alone was practically a scandal in the royal family. Rather than thinking that she was too common for royal jewels I had always thought that she was making her own statement with her ring.

I just saw all those magazine covers today, lol. In Kate`s case, if she really wants diamonds, I think she can just go buys ome diamonds. I agree with MGR about Camilla`s ring too. It is very dark looking in every pic I have seen of it. I would much prefer the sapphire. But honestly, my BTD kashmir is a much prettier blue.
