I'll be the voice on the other end and speak for going smaller What size center do most of her friends/family have? I'm young (22) and from an average southern middle class family. The largest center stone any of my friends have is 1 ct (and most are .5 or .75ct), so I didn't want anything much larger than that. I decided to go with a 6mm (1.1ct) cushion with a halo, so it's a bit larger visually and has great finger coverage, but still looks somewhat believable and affordable (though I wouldn't want my boyfriend to spend the $6000+ the ring would cost if it were diamond!). For an anniversary down the road I'll probably get a 2-3ct asscher or krupps Amora Gem, but by that point we'll have stable, well-paying jobs, and it will seem a more realistic, responsible purchase. All of that to say, beware of reverse shrinkage, lol. Unless you know that your girlfriend wants a big stone or come from a social circle that wears large stones, she's probably going to think a 2ct or 2.5ct stone is MASSIVE. Too big and she might feel a little uncomfortable wearing it. Do you want the engagement to be a complete surprise? You might make it a fun outing together and take her to a jewelry store and try on various size stones. You can see what she likes size-wise and see what styles are her favorites. Then you can buy the actual ring yourself and have it be a surprise. +1

I have a size 6 finger,..and my sweet spot for a solitaire is definitely 7.5. So I would say go for the 8mm. You can always halo her later...lol

Well if she liked the 2ct, then by all means go for it! Are you planning on going with the Amora enhancement? I'd recommend it, as it will put your stone in a near-colorless range (H/I). Otherwise it might seem a bit yellow. I'm assuming you're looking at rounds - if you do choose Amora (which most of the ladies on here would HIGHLY recommend), BTD and MoCo are currently sold out of 8.5mm, so that might factor into your decision! It just depends on when you'd want the ring. I also want to throw out the option of getting an Amora OEC. I don't particularly like the round moissanite cut (it's not cut like your typical round brilliant diamond), but I LOVE the OECs. They're possible the most realistic/accurate moissanite cut I've seen, and they sparkle like mad, but with chunkier, antique-style flashes rather than the splintery ones common to well cut rounds. It's all about personal preference, though. Check out KatNewby's thread on her 9mm here: http://betterthandiamond.com/discussion/ubbthreads.php/topics/733203/1 MoCo is getting a batch of Amora-ized OECs soon and they'll have 8mm and 8.5mm stones, but they'll probably sell out fairly quickly! They will be a bit more expensive than a regular round since they're a special cut.

Here is a picture of the ring i purchased on her finger. The center stone is a 1.76 ct diamond. It faces up larger because of the depth. You can tell by the picture that the stone is not actually set in this picture, it is simply placed on the prongs to get an idea of how it would look with a round stone. I'm thinking an amora moissy would look great next to the diamonds on the engagement and wedding bands. The picture is dark because it gives an idea of the setting. It also comes with a gorgeous matching band as well. [/URL]

Kat is your Amora in that size still really white as the smaller ones are? Or do you see teh infamous "warmth"? I've only seen Amora in 7mm. Hi SmartGuy I have an OEC (Old European Cut) Amora, and it does have some warmth. It is a J color, so while it still falls in the 'near colorless' range, it is still a little tinted. I have no qualms about the color though, because the cut steals the show, and since it is meant to mimic and antique stone, a little warmth is pretty fitting! Also, be aware that the OEC cut faces up less white than the Round Brillant (RB) Amoras. A large RB will be more white than a J, and will likely grade an H but face up as a G. So while I can't recommend the cut of the OEC over the RB enough, if color is the ultimate factor to you and not faceting, then I would point you in the direction of the RB Amora. (Labelo posted my thread already, so you can see if that amount of tint would not suit your liking, as that is totally okay too! )
