To be honest, I still haven't found mine and it has been 12 years since I started looking for my first engagement ring!! I went from wearing STRICTLY yellow gold to only wearing white, and have started to think about delving into palladium. I have always had a thing for square stones, although my current engagement ring is a round in a cushion halo...which I drooled over for weeks before ordering and truly love it, but I know it's not my forever style, despite currently craving more rounds. Luckily, like you said, in the land of sims we have more room to experiment. Thank goodness! Although, I'm pretty sure I'll be sticking with sims for the rest of my days...diamonds are just too stressful LOL.

hmmm, good question. For me, I haven`t bought anything (expensive) that I haven`t loved, so I have never sold anything. I have bought some berricle and HSN stuff to try things out, and I am glad, because those are the things I was unsure about, and the things I decided were not so much for me- like halos. My general style is the same now as it was 5+ years ago. I always go for cushions first and do not really like halos on my hand. I like some sort of solitaire, but embellished to have a little something more. That is what I did the first time around, and 3.5 sets in, that is still what I am drawn too. The one thing that has changed for me though, is my OCD, lol. I wasn`t aware, the first time around, of different setting options or prong options etc, and now I am much more specific/paeticular now. And I am much more particular in the finishing now. My first set, which I will always love, is not quite as refined as I like; but emotionally, I can`t alter it. But is is only through looking at the work of tons of benches and seeing tons of rings that I have been able to really see and appreciate the difference.

Great question!
Before my wedding, I just had a few pieces that were gifts or heirlooms. I rarely rarely wore jewelery. Just simple plain gold studs or hoops that I would leave in for months or years except to clean. I did pretty much always wear yellow gold though, with some silver. The few pieces I had had small simple settings with mostly small coloured stones.
I did buy myself a ring by an independent artist out on Vancouver Island while I was visiting once that I wore often. It was in yellow and a very simple, no stones, organic style of multiple thin wavy bands interweaving together. It was pretty me!
When we got engaged I actually ended up opting out of an ering as I could not figure out what I wanted! I tried on lots of styles in a few independent and chain stores but nothing really spoke to me! I did like the rose and yellow gold I tried on or the two tone and wider looks.
I ended up ordering a rather simple right hand ring for a wedding ring so I had something - white gold, small pear blue sapphire, crossover style, one tiny row of pave diamonds. It matched my husbands ring (which he loves!). It was pretty, but there were things about it that just meant I did not like it enough. The pave, very small stone, bright white did not work though I did like the wavy/crossover look of it. Plus I was getting a bit of sensitivity to the nickel. About 3 months after our wedding I told my husband I was not happy with it and we agreed to change it.
I switched to my Brian Gavin rings. Scattered 3mm bands, unplated palladium white gold, BTD Kashmir round (first 7mm then changed soon to 8mm). Things I liked: the flush set sidestones, that it was unplated, the simpleness. Things I did not like: having prongs (beautifully done claws but not my style for rings), how shiny it was, how "perfect" it was, how modern it was, how white it was (metal and white diamond sidestones). I also one of those rare people who get a palladium sensitivity.
Again my husband and I talked, and I got the go ahead to change. I had fallen hard for the unenhanced moissanite OEC as soon as I saw it and knew without a doubt i wanted one in 8mm (my discovered sweet spot - larger did not look or feel right and neither did smaller). I loved looking at other shapes but just knew I wanted that OEC!I knew I wanted to go with yellow or rose gold at that point and I knew as soon as I saw my ring styles they were exactly the ones for me. Everything about them was me. The brushed warm gold, the bezeled centre stone, the burnished champage/cognac sidestones, the wavy design, the "chunkiness" of it all put together, the natural and organic vibe.
These are most definitely my forever rings, just like my husband is my forever life partner. It just works, fits, is just right! They are just so me! Even my husband has told me in the two weeks since I got them how much he loves them at least a dozen times - he never said a thing about the old ones as he did not like them.
So, at 32 and after a 3ish year search, I have learned that what I love is yellow gold (brushed even better), simple and organic looks, solitaires with a twist, warmer coloured stones, round or rounded shaped stones, around 8mm mark, wavy/flowing curves, wider/chunkier bands/looks and sets, handmade, nontraditional and natural looks.
What I have learned I do not like (for me, but still can enjoy looking at) is pave/micropave, the modern micropave halos (I still like more vintage chunkier halos and I love your halos e.taylor, I would wear them ha ha), very thin delicate bands, high settings, white metals, pronged centre stones, very white stones, too modern or too antique, straight lines, lots of bling, pronged or pave eternities, and most CAD/CAST items.

I can't wait to get my new blinger done.... I hope it's my forever ring BUT i said that about the last one... I think i will be able to squeeze a 9mm cushion mossanite in her as the claws are bent over a bit and there is room between the border. I think the prongs would manage a 9mm - yay!!
I used to be a yellow gold girl but found that i have shifted to white gold, which was a shock. I like lots of detail on my rings, like my tanzanite one, which is a bit like your ruby one. My tanz one really suits her yellow gold though and is a keeper forever...
My 3ct moissanite i'm selling is a solitaire, i used to hate them because they where too plain (for me) but found myself going crazy for one last year... I love her but just fancy a change. I really think i will fancy a change forever and will just keep swapping and buying rings FOREVER or until my gorgeous hubby buys me the Burton/Taylor rock.....
