It's Sunday, so DH is home and I get some time to lazy around. Which means I get to surf the 'net a bit...Being that my mind is occupied with HEALTH, I have been looking at diet plans and such.

I had the opportunity to catch up on some GCB and as if they knew what was going on with me, they brought up the subject of dieting! There is one character that has weight issues and she brought up a biblical diet...which peaked my interest.

The idea, in the show, is to eat according to what foods are found in the Bible. After a bit of research I found that this is not a new idea. After reading a bit and I must say, I am very interested. Makes sense to me that it would be healthier as it would include foods prior to all the processed-ness.

What do you think?!

I think it can work and is a very healthy way of eating using moderation as the key, since you can overeat even healthy foods. I've heard it described as "the Jesus diet"

Quote:
The Jesus Diet Basics

The basic concept of the diet is that we shouldn’t consume foods that were not a part of the diet that Jesus would have eaten. Colbert explains that Jesus ate a Mediterranean-style diet based on wholesome, unprocessed foods in accordance with ancient Jewish dietary laws.

Based on his research he concluded that the diet of Jesus would have included fish, whole wheat bread, olives, figs, dates and red wine. Fish was widely available and was probably eaten on a daily basis, while red meat would have been consumed only occasionally, perhaps once a month.

Foods that are forbidden in the Bible, such as pork, are to be avoided, as are all processed foods including refined white flour and sugar.

it's a variation, in a lot of ways, of a low carb diet. Jordan Rubin, who wrote the Maker's Diet has a similar (if not identical? Haven't read about this one specifically and am making assumptions) program. I don't see anything wrong with it at all.

I've also heard of the 5 diet. If the food item has more than 5 ingredients, you can't eat it and they have to be all natural. The Hawaiian, middle eastern and Mediterranean diets are like that too. Nothing processed, all fresh and natural. Gillian McKeath (or something spelled close to that) is someone you should check out too. She's a top nutritionist in the UK.

I think they are all basically the same idea. Seems pretty interesting.

I would seriously consider it but it would require lots of planning and preparing. Especially in a household with a young child, who has not had to follow a strictly healthy diet!

well, I will tell you that I make everything from scratch (not looking for accolades-it's out of necessity) and would fall into most of those categories being grain and sugar free and my kids want for nothing food wise! Once you walk into this world you see how easy it is to make delicious alternatives. Don't be swayed just yet-it's definitely possible to have kids follow along if you find a few great recipes!

Today my kids had coconut flour blueberry pancakes for breakfast
Orange apricot scones with fruit salad and coconut cream for lunch
baby carrots, grape tomatoes, avocado and hard cooked eggs with sweet potato chips for a snack
meatballs with a tomato sauce with a green salad for dinner
vanilla coconut cupcakes for dessert

That doesn't seem so bad, does it? lol! I haven't met a kid yet that doesn't clamor for the grain free baked goods! No processed flours/sugars though I did use some maple syrup in 2 of the baked goods.

So, my point is that you may find that she loves some things you make on a "diet" even if you don't put her on it. IT is a good amount of prep and planning in the beginning. However after a month or so it will be second nature. So I'd say while it seems hard, it will only be for a bit. After a month you'll have a good stash of ingredients for whatever plan you end up choosing and a reasonable selection of tried and true recipes.

You don't have to change everything at once. People fail at making lifestyle changes because changing everything at once is HARD. Make small changes that you can adapt to so you are less likely to quit and easier to keep your family on board. This isn't a sprint, you are setting a pace you can maintain for a lifetime!

I am quite jealous e.taylor... I would love to start cooking from scratch, if not ALL the time, at least most of the time. I have been quite lazy and look for the quickest meals most often.

I think I am going to start looking around and starting to incorporate some of this in our diet. I am looking to make this a whole lifestyle change for my family. Right now, with my sister and her kids here, I am not sure a change like this is plausible. But she plans to be out this summer and by then I will have made small changes to prepare him (and his father) for the big changes!

My son is sort of a picky eater and I blame myself. He actually used to eat much healthier, in fact until he was 2 I was convinced he was a vegetarian! When he first started foods I was very good... I homemade all baby food. He loved fruits and veggies. I wish I had followed his lead, now he only wants HOT DOGS!

Great to know you have been able to get your kids to enjoy this, makes me feel hopeful that this will work for us! (I don't necessarily mean the whole Bible diet, but a natural, healthy diet)

like I said-don't be jealous. It was out of necessity. But I'll tell you that all three kids are in school, K, 2nd and 3rd grade so still young but not tiny and they've eaten like this for 7 years. There is zero issue with it in terms of peers or anything-the biggest complaint I hear is that their friends want their food. lol.

As was said up thread-baby steps! I was thrown into this so it was 100% from go, but it certainly doesn't need to be like that. You have a lot of options. I just wanted to show you that removing processed food still leaves you with a ton of delicious choices!

Thank you e.taylor! My son is only 4, so now is a great time to start him on a healthy lifestyle! Plus, we plan to add another one at some point and I would like to have that one started off right!
