My jeweler said they can be removed, but it's best not to because clarity enhancement compromises the integrity of the diamond. That's what I've heard too ... they're more prone to chipping, cracking, etc. down the road.

I don't have a clarity enhanced diamond. I do however, have a gorgeous pear diamond that has two carbon spots. My jeweler said they can be removed, but it's best not to because clarity enhancement compromises the integrity of the diamond. I prefer to leave the carbon spots anyway because they help to identify my diamond. That is what I have always been told as well, that "enhanced" diamonds are weaker and more prone to chipping and cracking. My understanding is the above is not true, you will be told that by jewelers who do not sell clarity enhanced diamonds. See this article from Good Old Gold a well respected diamond dealer. http://www.goodoldgold.com/4cs/clarity/clarityenhanceddiamonds/

I also read that they put a substance in there to fill the hole they make but if you have subsequent work on the stone, when heated, it all shoots back out. That in itself (not being a permanent treatment) negates the benefit of the cost savings. They can easily be re-enhanced for a nominal fee. If you don't expose it to a torch or acid, you have no worries. Simply inform your bench jeweler that it has been fracture filled so he/she does not expose the stone itself to the torch. Many enhanced diamond dealers will re-enhance it for free in the very unlikely event that the enhancement is reversed somehow. Make sure if you purchase one they use the Yehuda type method of using silicon glass to fill the fracture vs bromide which can turn dark. Being an educated consumer, being aware of above issues can save you thousands and you can get a bigger diamond than you may otherwise be able to afford. Of course the other C's need to be considered as well, Cut and Color.
