What are you guys talking about?? Diana saw the sapphire ring in a shop window and wanted it. THAT was the scandal, that she picked her own engagement ring and just picked it out of a shop. Prince William asked Prince Harry if he could have their mothers ring to give the Kate as HARRY is the one that Diana gave the ring to after she died. I think William got her favorite watch or something like that. But apperantly William really wanted Kate to have his mothers ring so Harry sweetly handed it over.
I don't know where all this "she wasn't worthy" drama story is coming from... I don't recall her seeing it in a window...but that they brought her several rings on a tray and she picked that one. The scandal was that anyone with the money could have the exact same thing. It wasn't "special."

It was actually a catalog ring. BUT Diana loved it and that is all that matters. It is an extreme honor for Kate to have that ring and it looks LOVELY on her! sapphires rock.

Does anyone know what Royal jewels *could* have been available to her? For the rest of us...early 80's hmmm, marquise and baguettes? Was that all the rage back then? I can't imagine any other ring to be a Diana ring. It is so iconic.

Yup, the official version is that a tray full of rings was brought to the Palace for Diana, and she chose the biggest sapphire in it. The ring was alreeady photographed for Garrard's Christmas Catalog and it had already gone to print, so Diana got her ring, and then all the UK saw what it had cost. I saw that on one of the many specials they aired on TV as part of the royal wedding.
As much as I like Camilla's ring (EC perfection!), it is GRAY! While I love warm stones, I like them to tint towards yellow, not gray. It does look like she baked it a little too much. That's how I remember it, borismom. I must've seen every TV special that aired about Diana when I was a teenager. I was enamored with the "fairy tale" princess-to-be. But anyway, I think I saw a fairly recent segment on the Today show with that story of Garrard's Christmas catalog and Diana choosing it from a tray that was brought to her. It aired around the time William and Kate got engaged.
