Just wanted to add that Diana was in no way a 'commoner' like Kate is. Diana was daughter of an Earl, and from a family that is seriously titled and aristocratic.
That's why, even though Charles and Camilla were in love, he was told he had to marry a 'suitable' titled girl just like her. And that didn't end up going so well. So that's part of the reason people liked Kate- even though she's a 'commoner' William loves her and didn't just marry someone of the seen-to-be-correct social class.
