There is a gorgeous tiffany legacy style Kyanite ring on etsy that I'm considering purchasing, but Kyanite?

I thought Kyanite was too soft to use in jewelry. Can someone school me on the differences between Kyanite, Sapphire and Spinel.

THANKS in advance.

I think it is too soft, as well as it is brittle. The info I found said that it was MOHS "4.5-5 parallel to one axis and
6.5-7 perpendicular to that axis" I have never seen a MOHS like that before, but apparently how it is set would make a difference.

Sapphire is a 9, and spinel is 7.5-8.

The colour of the stone is beautiful!! But on the upper right hand side of the inside of the bezel it is wavy... It should not be like that. Either the bezel is wonky or they have photoshopped something on the stone... That part of the bezel is very different from the rest of the bezel though; the rest is smooth.

Kyanite is very soft. It ranges from 4.5 to 1.5 on the MOH scale. It is part of the silicate family. It also has perfect cleavage so I would really recommend agains its use in a ring.

A pendant, maybe.

That's a lovely ring. It is very similar to the BTD sapphire ring I'm going to have made grin

~and describing MOHs with cleavage and perpendicular is actually rather common. I've seen diamond, moissy, CZ, etc. described that way. That is why Diamonds *will* crack/chip with wear. If the crystal is oriented just right and the strike is just right, MOHs does not = 10.

You will find that kyanite is a bit too soft for everyday and more importantly doesn't sparkle very well. Sapphire is lovely and clear whilst kyanite at first glance looks clear but look in detail, in light and you will see it's flat. The colour of a Kyanite can be that of an expensive sapphire but put next to each other, there will be no comparison in clarity or depth....
