we do the great pumpkin too. lol. I dreamed that up when my kids were young. you leave your candy out halloween night and the great pumpkin comes, under cover of darkness to collect it and leave gifts for the generous children in its place.

woe is me when they figure THAT one out!

Luckily they don't have tremendous sweet urges so a book, doll or trinket is a welcome substitute! Plus then I don't have sugared up kids.

to answer the original question of "what do you give your kids?" when they lose a tooth, I give them a straw to put in the hole because that's fun.

We don't participate in any "make believe brings Stuff" activities. We have spontaneous birthday parties where we have cake, balloons and think of the recipient in special ways ... like one weekend we surprised my husband with a cool shirt, great water gun, and a load of water balloons for an entire weekend of vacation like fun... and cake. grin

I could have a long heated argument about the "why" - but the choices you make for your family are right for you and I have NO business trying to tell you otherwise.

I hope all of you and all of your children continue to grow into accepting, self-aware individuals. smile

My 5 year old daughter has her first two loose teeth on the bottom front and I plan to give her a quarter for each tooth! I might go up to a dollar, depending on what I have in my wallet that day. There is no way I am going to give her $20 when a quarter seems just as good to her.

If your daughter has the sparkle bug... a $20 bill isn't as cool as a quarter anyway. At least a quarter is SHINY. grin

CUTE! smile I wish I could do that, but DD's birthday is 2 weeks later. Then a mere 6 weeks after that is Christmas. It's just too much gift giving for our budget. LOL!

For Hallowe'en... we have DD bake cookies, muffins, etc, and fill her candy bucket with them. Then we walk in costume to all her friends houses, knock on the doors, say "Trick or Treat!" and hand OUT her homemade treats. She LOVES giving them surprise cookies, all decorated, etc.

Now that she's older, we allow her to do 1 block of traditional candy collecting after handing out her treats. And we make it last - she gets 1 piece as a treat once in awhile. She still has candy from last Halloween... as she only asks for a piece every few days. So it's no big deal to her.

when i lost teeth at my Daddy's house, i got $2 bills
when i lost teeth at home, on a night my mom was working, my stepfather gave me $20 - if my mom was home, i got $5

... i preferred the $2 bills! plus, my Daddy kept all my teeth! i have no idea what my mom did with them.

...and to threadjack, this thread reminds me that i wanted to watch The Hogfather again! laugh

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0765458/

(it's not scary. and it's more about the Tooth Fairy than what the IMDB suggests!)

I got a loonie ($1) or a twoonie ($2) I guess depending on what my mom had. SO I guess I will give $5. I am 5ish years away, so I haven't thought about it yet, lol.
