Our store would charge $90 for the sizing and guarantee for 1 year any stone up to 1 carat in size/weight against loss (we would make sure the stones were all tight before we would deliver the repair. We consider this a fair price, but there is always someone who says we're higher than another jeweler. All we can say is that if you look at the quality of our work and that of our competitors, you get what you pay for. We see many pieces that were worked on elsewhere that we have had to fix later for the customer.

The thing is, David does all the work himself, so there is no "middle man" marking up the price.

He also does a LOT of volume so he can afford to give low prices.

His quality of work isn't "cheap" either. One of his biggest clients is a high end jewelery store on Rodeo Drive!!! Imagine the mark up that place puts on his work!!!!!

I feel lucky to work with him every time.

Tigger, you said the jeweller is re-shanking your ring... NOT just resizing it. So I think $150 is totally fair. Your jeweller is wanting to do this probably because you are changing the size more than 2 full sizes. Adding a new shank is the best way to maintain the integrity of the top of the ring, otherwise, it could end up the wrong shape, etc.

When I had this done to my original e-ring to bring it from a size 6 to a size 7.75 - this was 6 years ago now - it cost me $300 plus 15% tax (total was $345). This included re-shanking the ring (bottom 1/2 of shank replaced), the actual sizing (making the top 1/2 of the ring the right shape to be the larger size prior to adding the new shank), and re-rhodium plating the WG after the work was completed.

I could have just had it sized with a crappier goldsmith, but the shank was too thin and had other solder marks from a previous sizing, making the shank too weak to handle MORE sizing marks and last a lifetime as an e-ring. A new shank made it sturdy and beautiful again.

That was 6 years ago, when gold was much cheaper than it is today, so I say you're definitely getting a bargain for that work.

ETA: Asha Diamonds re-sized my current wedding set - they're palladium - for a much less expensive price. BUT the rings weren't being re-shanked... and they weren't being sized more than 2 sizes. (I went from a size 8 to a 6.)

Bryan, yes, you get what you pay for and sometimes that means you get bad quality. However, in the case of David, his work and quality is stellar and his prices are wonderful. So, that really doesn't apply here.

I was referring to our local jewelers, not to DK. I never bad mouth specific jewelers, especially those I'm not privy to, but if you saw some of the repairs we get......

I had them send it back to the shop without the repairs done. I can't justify spending that on it right now. I wonder if I gave them the gold how much of a difference in price there might be...

I resized a thin 14k white gold ring from a 6 to a 7.5 and it cost me $70.

A guy I work with just got engaged and he was trying to get an idea of what size ring to get since she doesn't own any other rings that he could find (have you ever heard of such a thing???)....Anyway, I over heard him on the phone asking "how can I tell what size she is?" etc...and they must of asked about her size in general and he says " Well she's not big or anything, she's like 5'2" and thin but she has jimmy deans for hands". I started laughing so hard, the coffee was just running down my chin...

Yes this has nothing to do with sizing but thought I throw that in. (It's all about the humor with me)

I personally think that is slightly high. I would expect to pay around $100 with the price of gold and the amount of sizes.
