I have a 14k ring that I'd like to have made larger. It's currently a 5 1/2 and I need it to be an 8. There's nothing really unusual about the ring. It doesn't have stones on the shank or anything. The jeweler wanted to insert a half of a shank on the back to up the size. They wanted 150.00 to do this! I know gold is high right now but that seems excessive for such a small amount.

The last jeweler I went to for sizing (granted, this was about 5 years ago) charged about $30/size. I'd say with the rising cost of gold, that seems normal. I'd get a second opinion from a reputable jeweler first though, just in case.

yeah, I should have included that I had a ring sized recently-like in the last few months. 14k and it went from 5.5 to 6.75 (left to right!) and it was over $100.

Send it to DK. He was going to size a WG ring for me up 3.5 sizes for $50. He also sized an intricate platinum ring for me for $125.

That's quite a deal on the half-shank if the ring really needed that. The problem in sizing a ring larger is that even though there are no stones on the shank, the jeweler is still responsible for any stone loss, so that protection is built into the price.

I'm still amazed by the prices I see quoted here for repairs! Must have far less overhead than we do or they don't try to make much money I guess. I suppose that's a topic onto itself.

Wow every jeweler I've ever come across does not in any way assume responsibility for stone loss. They just say if it happened it will be whatever extra they want to charge on top of the crazy high sizing fees. It costs around a hundred bucks to size a yellow gold solitaire from a 6.5 to an 8 round these parts!

David assumes responsibility for stone loss, does amazing work, is honest, has a retail establishment that has been in business 30 years and has amazing customer service. I don't know how he does it, but he's flooded with customers, so he must do something right .

seems high to me. I got mine sized from a 6 to 8.25 for $45.
