I have light/ medium brown hair naturally approxomately between a level 4-5 and use the 10AA and get a nice neutral medium blonde . Since my hair is dark it doesn't turn platinum like the color swatch. You might need a 30 or a 20 vol developer with your color . If your hair is turning brassy with other colors I'm assuming store bought it might mean you need a little extra lift in the color to get you where you want to go color wise. I would suggest a stand test. Also snip out a little section of hair from somewhere on your head where its not going to be visible and secure it with tape or a little rubber band and mix a small amount of product and apply it to this hair to see if you like the results, also try a patch test to make sure your not allergic to the color. BTW wella color is a 1:2 mixing ratio so, for hour patch test and or stand test I would mix 1/2 a teaspoon with 1 teaspoon of developer. Hope this helps smile

This is great advice! I love Sally's and they have helped me in the past strip my hair before. I will put on hold my hair color tonight and go tomorrow!

Thanks everyone, I'll see if I can find a recent picture with my red hair! I just had it in September. I love it.

ETA: nvm, I only have pictures of when I had pneumonia (with no makeup and wrinkles showing :P)

I think if you want to go lighter (I have the same issue btw) the key is heavy highlights with bleach. Its the most natural looking and it's not brassy. Does require a visit to a stylist though. Groupon comes out periodically with highlight packages- Ive had good experiences with that.

good suggestion for groupon sparkly! i have been going to different hair stylists and i cant find one who does a good job with my hair! I am going to keep looking around.. tired of doing my own hair (and cutting my own hair as well!).

Well..Just got done doing my hair... and it looks exactly the same! lol.. gosh.. I guess my hair just really wants to be this brassy color.

I am going to go get highlights done tomorrow after work. ugh.

Bleh. going to get more highlights tomorrow after I give a seminar(maybe - if I dont have to go to the doctor).

I hope that they can lighten it. I just dont understand why my hair refuses to respond.

I am going to tell them to spare no bleach on my head for these - no one listens to me when I tell them it just doesnt want to budge!

Also, currently have a hair cholesterol treatment on my head! I did one the other day as well and alas... no help for my course hair. Im just born with terrible hair! (also - my hormones are not doing me any favors).

Hopefully that will help strengthen my hair so they feel more comfortable with applying bleach. Stylists are very off-put by my hair for some reason. its very course lately due to my hormones and they think I just don't condition it or take care of it - when really - I am obsessed with my hair!

if you can call around, see if any of the local salons have a colour correction specialist.

if you have naturally thick, coarse hair... that may be part of why you have issues with drugstore hair colour.

kinda the flipside is my mom, who's the only person i've ever known whose hair is thinner and more baby-fine than mine, she had *FRIED* her hair using drugstore haircolour. leaving it on too long, and doing it WAY too often.
i sent her to a friend of mine, and he was able to fix everything.

(he doesn't do so well with my hair, though, 'cuz he specializes in uber-natural haircolour. which... isn't my thing)

Bethany, I have the same type of hair! It's very coarse and when I try to go lighter it always turns brassy. I'm going back to my red for that very reason.

But, one thing I found that works wonders on my hair is extra virgin coconut oil. I bought mine at Vitamin World, and it actually comes in a jar because its solid at room temp. You rub it between your hands to liquify and slather in your hair. Some people leave overnight, but I find just even an hour helps so much!

From what I gather, the issue with so many hair treatments and potions is that they cannot actually penetrate the hair cuticle and cortex-but coconut oil can!

that's the colour my hair is once whatever colour i've used on it wears or washes out.

my natural haircolour is... khaki. a shade of dark blonde that doesn't exist in a bottle, apparently. not unlike the colour of this here shirt:

i don't have much advice to give on making it a lighter blonde - i tend to gravitate towards reds and pinks - but there are some really smarterrific ladies around here who may have good advice!

i just wanted to let you know you're not alone smile

I agree with Cat, you'd look fantastic with a natural looking red!
