7.5mm in a halo or 8mm solitaire in a clear stone. I'm a size 7.75.

After a lot of trial and error, this is my sweetspot smile

I totally forgot to say that the 7-8mm is for clear/light stones. I feel more comfortable having larger stones when they are colored. I also love halos! smile

this is my diamond cluster ring which measures 11-12mm across the top. The band is less than 2mm where it meets the basket, so from a distance, it looks one huge stone floating on my finger...I always get nice comments when I wear it and nobody yet has suggested its too big. I wear a 6 and the ring is a 7 so it flops around but I still wear it(carefully).

So wear whatever stone size you like....

For believability, I wouldn't go much bigger than a carat, but we're poor college students about to be poor grad students. I haloed my 6mm/1.1ct cushion to give me the finger coverage I wanted.
For aesthetics, I think my upper end will be about 2.5-3cts, so 8-9mm? Anything much bigger looks gaudy on *me* though I sometimes like bigger honkers on other gals' fingers smile

For colored stones I would go bigger, but not much.

Dont mean to thread jack but, Deb that ring is so awesome, I love it smile I used to have an older square cluster ring that I dearly loved. Sadly it went missing.

I wear a 6mm Asha in my wedding set. It seems about right. I also have an 8mm Wink Cartier ACC and I love the way it looks but I feel kind of conspicuous in it! I'm going to try a 7mm next...

LOTS of variables on this one, as mentioned.

For clear stones I like 8-9.5mm halo'ed. Or 9-11mm solitaires.

For colored stones, I would say maybe a smidge bigger is okay too.

*this is all for round cuts, other cuts are so varied that it is totally impossible for me to say without seeing it on my size 6 finger.
