I've been wondering this? For both a halo, and a solitaire.

What is considered low set, middle of the road, and high set?

& I would like to hear personal preference as well! smile

I tend to prefer low set. I've run the gamut through the years and I prefer the look and protection that low set gives me on either a halo or solitaire. I tend to bang it against everything if it's higher than 6mm.

Thanks Mamato2blessings, does that mean that you consider 6mm's low set, or is that mid-height?

I consider that mid. I consider 8mm high. 6mm is the max I can wear and not have it get knocked around lol. I like 4-5mm and consider that low set laugh.

I think it's totally a personal preference thing. IMO, the lower set rings tend to make the stone look a tad smaller than one set in a cathedral.

remember that a cathedral setting isn't necessarily a tall setting, though!

cathedral refers to the "shoulders" of a ring that swoop up towards the stone... and although it implies a tall setting, it really has nothing to do with the height of the stone.

i prefer the overall setting height to be no more than 1-2mm taller than the height of the stone itself.

I agree with this as well. I like mine to sit as low as the stone will allow.

Thanks guys! I actually think I prefer a mid to high height on a setting. Not sure why.

The stone for my e-ring is 5.96mm tall (don't know the terminology lol), and the halo setting sits flush with girdle and the setting is about 1.7mm of height under the culet, so I'm thinking the ring will probably sit at about 7-8mm high, and after hearing the responses I think this is a good height for me smile

Exactly this! I like my stone to feel secure, and to me "low" means this. Mid-height would be 3-4mm taller than the stone, high would be 5+mm.

Mine is about 7-8mm high, but it's a cathedral, so it feels low set to me. Plus, the stone is set quite low, so it doesn't get bumped around.
