A bezel will absolutely protect a stone. It is probably he best way to protect the stone. But do you love bezels? Swapping stones out of bezels is tricky though...generally you have to choose between the stone or the setting. As well, setting CZ in a bezel can be precarious as the stones are softer and can easily chip. With a pear, the big thing is the tip. So you could do the standard v-tip, but I personally think they are kinda bulky and not my thing. What I would do, if you don't want to bezel it, is 3 tiny claw prongs. I should give you the same protection as the v-tip, but it is less than a bezel.

As for a halo, it will give you some protection because the girdle of the stone is not going to get hit ever, but then you have pave stones at risk of damage... so it is a toss up.
