For my fellow colored stone addicts - 12/06/11 01:09 PM

I've had these stones for a while, waiting to find the perfect settings. I went to NYC for the weekend with some sparkly friends (who have been there many times before) and they took me to the diamond district in Manhattan to find settings for my (and their) stones.... can't tell you how much fun this was! These would pretty much be my Christmas and 10 yrs anniversary (next month) gifts and probably every other holiday I can think of for the next few years.....

I've had the spinel stone the longest, but I think it was worth the wait. All are set in 18k wg with good quality diamonds. Please don't look at the prongs too closely because they haven't been polished or rhodium plated yet... their "polish" guy that they trust with colored stones wasn't available, but I couldn't bear to leave them, so I'll just live with "unfinished prongs" until I can get back to NYC (hopefully in the spring).....

4.69ct earth-mined natural apricot spinel (very difficult to find this color spinel in this size)

Yes, that is an inclusion that looks like a black line, but it's not visible IRL without magnification.

Cool thing about the pendant is that it is an enhancer, so it can be worn with pearls or on a heavy chain.

Yes, I think I have another photo that shows that... now you know why I posted (in listing discussions) that I will listing some of my "keeper" stones over the next few days......

Posted by: e.taylor

Re: For my fellow colored stone addicts - 12/06/11 01:24 PM

Casey, it's incredible.

I wonder if you can "retrofit" a pendant to be like that? I have one that I want to be able to wear with pearls or just plain, and it has a nice large bale. Hmmmm...should ask about that. I'm not willing or able to do a reset, but who knows? Perhaps it can be done...

I just LOVE that one though! All of them, but that is a stunner.

The stones are from differnt vendors (well, the two sapphires are from the same vendor) and the settings are all from the diamond district in NYC.

Re: For my fellow colored stone addicts - 12/09/11 06:59 AM

These photos were taken by one of two of enablers..... er, I mean, friends that introduced me to the diamond district in Manhattan. I'll check to see if she sent me any more photos that I didn't post. Unfortunately my good camera (which is actually DH's) is on the fritz right now and my little canon (which is old) doesn't do that great... but I'll try a bit later today to see if I can get a few decent shots.

Well Ms. Bling, you don't live very far away - that could be arranged. I'm soon to become a new puppy mommy, so I'm pretty much tied to home through the holidays, but I bet after the first of the year we could meet and I'd let you try them all on - lol... as long as I could cuddle that cute boy of yours - deal?

Thank you, but please remember, I'm 60 years old - most of you ladies have several years to catch up! You get to indulge yourself a little differently when you get to be my age and your kids are grown and on their own.... when I was first married (at 20), I had a .38ct diamond solitaire and I thought I was all that because most of my friends had .25ct stones!

Re: For my fellow colored stone addicts - 12/09/11 12:04 PM

Oh, I forgot to add this disclaimer - that is not my hand, it is the photographers, so those are 40+ year old hands, not 60yr old hands - lol.

When my camera starts working again, I'll take some more on my hands.

2nd Shotgun on the pink sapphire. OMG I just about died when I saw this!!! love drool love Do you mind sharing the vendor you got the pink sapphire ring? It's so hard to find trusted gemstone vendors these days, I've seen a few nice stoes on eBay but was skeptical about the vendor crazy All of your rings are fantastic!

Hi Stranger!

I got the pink sapphire and the medium blue sapphire (ovals) from Gary Braun - Finewater gems. He's a precision cutter (my apologies if you already know this) but in these two cases, the native cuts were good enough he didn't recut them, he just got them certed to make sure they were what they were supposed to be. I'm not going to lie, they weren't cheap.... He sourced these himself when he went to Sri Lanka last year.

He's at Tuscon as we speak and said that he hopes that his Sri Lanka "connection" will be there with some sapphires, but I heard there isn't a lot of corundum hanging out these days. I believe the cutters hope to score some native cut stones that are candidates for recuts. If you have something specific you are looking for, let him know and he may be able to source it. I jumped on the pink one the second I saw it because I have been chasing that color in a non-treated stone for a very long time.

I waited a bit on the blue one until I saw him put another stone "on sale" and emailed him and made him an offer... he didn't accept my offer, but he did come down on the price a bit "because I was a good customer" lol. He has a light pink stone on his site right now.

I pretty much stopped buying any sapphires on ebay that weren't certed unheated or didn't come with an AGL or GIA cert.... been burned a few too many times.

Thanks for the info Casey, I'm definitely going to keep an eye on Gary's site. Hopefully he'll find some good stuff at the gem show. I shy away from eBay too because i've heard/read that most of those stones are glass filled and/or color treated Topaz. No thanks.

Actually yes! Except that my stone (as far as they could tell by looking yesterday, it's with their bench today) is within .1mm of the size of the stone that was in the setting that I saw, so instead of having a ring made, I'll just be getting the setting I saw, which is fine with me..... saves lots of time and some money because I'm sure commissioning a brand new setting would be even more money.....

So instead of getting a "custom" setting, I'm "just" getting a designer setting = lol...... works for me... I'm not big on patience anyway.
