The idea of a hypersexualized youth culture has made headlines in various national newspapers, though the term "hypersexual" is fairly modern.

I can't believe when I come accross videos (like the one I will link below) or the "Single Ladies" videos. Parents actually allow this? Parents laugh at this? This is your child dressing inappropriately, dancing too sexual.

These girls are ONLY seven. That's first/second grade.

Maybe I'm just an uptight, educator.

Wrong on all levels. You are not uptight, that is deplorable. I so wish I didn't click on that, just ruined my night.

very very sad... that really hurts my heart. those girls are so young. there's so much that goes into the subconscious of our kids already, with the media and all, and with a parents encouragement i can only imagine the irreparable damage...

its not the kids' fault, they think its cute. they hear the applause, and the attention and smiles will make them feel good. its horrible that they will now equate makeup, suggestive dancing and skimpy clothes with self-esteem and happiness. those parents really blow my mind.

DH saw me looking at this clip and I cannot even tell you what comments he had about parents that would think this is cute! This is way too sad.

The sad thing is those costumes took planning and money to buy. You can see where the mothers priorities are.

No, Jsmith, you're not uptight. Those of us with fresh eyes who are not part of this world can clearly see how inappropriate this is.

I'm all for artisitc expression in dance and moving the body for exercise and confidence, but this particular dance is uncomfortably suggestive when done by 7 yr olds. Blech.

Where are the days when 7-year olds used to have tea parties with their dolls?!?!?!

I thought the video was very sad, and those parents should be ashamed of themselves sexualizing their children in that way. It makes me cringe when I think of all the little girls that are stolen by sexual predators.........

i'm not gonna watch the video because it'll just make me upset.

but this thread reminds me of how ANGRY i got, and how i had *just a few words* for my stepbrother a few years back when he was helping his daughter - she was about three at the time - learn the words to that Britney Spears "I'm A Slave For U" song. so she could sing it at karaoke.
dude was in his 30's, he should've known better!

i'll admit, when i was 3 years old, i was listening to music that most people wouldn't consider appropriate for a little munchkin (Kiss & Conway Twitty, as two examples) and i have a very distinct memory of one day, after kindergarten, coming home and listening to a Prince record and then a Strawberry Shortcake record. all by myself in my room, and loving them both.
so, er, i know i don't really have the right to pass judgements, but c'mon! teaching a toddler to bootydance while singing skank songs (i like Britney, don't get me wrong, but all her songs are about sex. just like Conway Twitty, and i like him, too) and thinking it is the funniest thing you've ever seen? that ain't right.
much less filming it and putting it on the internet?

Appalling was the first thing that came to mind! How the parents thought this was appropriate is beyond me and to top it off posted it on youtube so anybody could view it! Why do parents seem to want to rush their little girls to grow up to fast and miss out on their innocence?

Ugh!!!!! What is soooooo sad besides the costumes is you can tell these babies spent countless hours perfecting this dance routine. They should be playing, learning, having fun. My kids took dance lessons, so I KNOW how long it takes to get a routine such as this down so well. Shame on the parents. And for those who think it is cute......I am sorry to say that they may be too young, or sheltered to know how this appeals to the degenerates of society. Stepping off my soapbox now.
