So I bought my diamond ring from ebay and it was advertised with priority mail.

Seller took it right to the post office the next morning and sent me tracking. It seems that she sent it registered mail-though I'm not sure why.

Priority would have provided up to 5k insurance, so that would have been fine. Anyway, there has been absolutely no movement on the tracking (dropped off saturday) at all.

Does Reg. Mail show tracking each step of the way? How long does it take?
I'm kinda peeved right now-should I be or do I just have a case of the "want -it- nows"? \:\/

When I sent something to Winfield's by delivery confirmation, I saw the following messages (in purple) when I checked tracking. Not all at once, but on the date as each event occurred.

If the pkg was sent after busines hours on Saturday, it wouldn't have been processed until yesterday. So you should be seeing at least an "Acceptance" message on tracking soon.

Your item was delivered at 1:44 PM on October 31, 2009 in BOISE, ID 83705.

Detailed Results:

Delivered, October 31, 2009, 1:44 pm, BOISE, ID 83705

Processed through Sort Facility, October 29, 2009, 8:40 pm, (edited for privacy), OH 45---

Acceptance, October 29, 2009, 3:33 pm, (edited for privacy), OH 45---

I've never used registered mail either but i would think it would track the same way as d.c.

After acceptance, I guess you'd see a "Processed" message next. I'd give it the whole day before checking again. Or you could always call your local post office and ask about the reg. mail process.

You could also e-mail the seller about your concern and tell her you're not familiar with this shipping method so could she please explain tracking to you.

Good luck and keep us posted.

IMHO the USPA has the worlds worst tracking sys. it is not real time,it isn't even *real* accurate. Don't bother getting yourself all worked up over the USPS... they're a lost cause. save it for something that counts. ;\) BTW it doesn't matter what method you choose with USPS it doesn't discriminate against Priority, Express, Registered or Reindeer.

However the insurance would have been nice.

Registered mail should show every time it's handed off since it has to be signed each step of the way. That's why it's the most secure form of mailing but that also means it will take longer. I would just assume tracking hasn't been updated yet to the website to show activity after it's been accepted.

You could always call USPS and ask:

You can get insurance up to $25,000 for registered mail. Value has to be declared and insurance purchased which is also how Priority mail works. The insurance isn't included in the basic mailing fee. Otherwise, liability is very limited on what the Postal Service will pay for lost/damaged packages if insurance isn't purchased.

Ok, I just called USPS to ask about this. They told me that registered mail should be 2-3 business days. BUT it might not show each step on tracking. She said reg. mail is the most secure so they dont do that. If its scanned at any point along the way its a "courteousy".

So it didnt come today, but I guess it should tomorrow?

I just dont want any problems with a package that cost this much!

You're not going to have any problems. That's the beauty of registered mail. Because EVERYONE who touches that package has to sign for it as it goes step to step. Registered mail is also required to be stored and transported in locked containers. That's why it takes longer to arrive and why registered packages rarely get "lost" because the last person who signed would be held accountable.

I hope you get it tomorrow but it could take a day or two longer. As long as it shows accepted by the PO, it's in the system. \:\)

So good to know all this information on registered mail. Do you send your jewelry through registered mail, Tricksi? This sounds like the best way to be protected and track high value items.

That and taping the box a la Joyce! \:\) And insurance, of course.
