I am getting ready to get a tattoo and finally decided on what I want. It's morphed over the years but the general idea has stayed the same so I am pretty sure this is what I want. However, I have no clue WHERE I want to put it. I have debated over and over again if I want it somewhere visible or somewhere where I can hide it most of the time. The shape of it lends to a more visible spot but I am leaning toward a more hidden area. ACK. Do you see my dilemma?

I also wonder about the pain and what might be the best place where I can tolerate it. Some people have told me I have a high tolerance for pain but personally I think I am a wimp.

So, what have your experiences been with tattoos? I still need to meet with an artist but I am pretty sure after looking at a number of online portfolios where and who I want to go see. I have attached an example of the tattoo I want.

That looks really pretty, but I can see how it would be difficult to place. What if you started it at the back or side of your ankle/heel and wound it up around your ankle just a bit? It might hurt a little though if you're quite bony around that area.

Very pretty tattoo! Placement is important. I have two, and both are easily hidden. I have one on my bikini line (and can only be seen when I wear the tiniest bikini in the world ;1 ) and one on my right hip. The one on the bikini line didn't hurt nearly as much as the one on my hip. The hip was more painful than I had expected, and it took a lot longer to heal. It was swollen for almost a week. The one on my bikini line didn't swell at all.

Do you want to be able to see your tattoo? I had both of mine placed on the front/side of my body so that I could see them when I looked down rather than needing to look in a mirror. I didn't want any on my back because I didn't see the point of getting a tattoo that I would never see.

I have a couple tattoo artist friends so I sent the picture over to see what they said... Just for an idea.

(In sum)
They said that placement is important for something like this and placement of this tattoo will always be awkward. The best places for this tattoo would be on the upper part of an arm or on the lower back horiztonally, side to side. These two positions allow it to look like it has a starting point and an end point... not like it came out of nowhere.

\:\)

None of my tattoos have hurt and i've gotten them in more painful areas. It depends on the person.

Oh this is so hard!!

Ivanna, the ankle is a place I keep coming back to over and over again but my hesitation is that it is a bony area and there is not much chance of hiding it either. Both of these things I could get over if I wanted to. ;\)

Maryl, ok so bikini line ... is that under your bellybutton but above the hair line? I am just trying to get a visual. It's also a good point about wanting to look at them too. I think I do want to see my skin art which is one of the reasons why I hesitate from any place on my back.

Jsmith, I am glad you asked some friends of yours and I am glad I am not the only one struggling with placement. The other place I was considering was my shoulder but again I struggle with how it will look. I don't want it to just be floating out of nowhere. My upper arm I haven't considered. I am very freckled and was thinking that the freckles will interfere with the design. I have more freckles on my arm than my leg but still....

Also, this won't be my last tattoo either as I have a plan for another one too. It will probably be easier to place but it also requires a lot of design work too. Ugh. Decisions!

Have you considered having it wrap entirely around your ankle, like in a circle? I think that would be very pretty. You could also do it on the top of your foot. But, that might be a little painful.

I have one on my right ankle on the outside. It wasn't bad at all and I would love to have another. Just want to lose some weight first.

anywhere but your lower back!

i'd suggest your upper thigh, though. i think it'd be pretty to have a vine of (cherry blossoms? pink dogwoods? i'm not good with flowers) winding around, or meandering across, your leg. in time, if you wanted, you could always continue it down your calf and around your ankle. otherwise, it'd be easy for you to see and enjoy, but equally easy to keep hidden in your daily life.

I like Erika's idea of having it wrap around your ankle.

So like an anklet of sorts? That might work too! However, I am very specific about the number of blooms and buds (5 and 2) so I would have to see if there is enough there to work with.
