Hi friends,
Sorry I have been away. My mother suddenly passed away last Sunday and it's been very rough. She was hospitalized for a brain aneurysm rupture, developed pneumonia, and then suffered a massive heart attack that eventually took her life. I am trying to hang in there by keeping myself distracted.

Anyway, my father is having a harder time than I am and we are seriously thinking of getting him a dog. Please I need your suggestions for a dog with the following qualities:

Smaller dog - 10 - 15 lbs max
Doesn't smell
Sheds very little
Good with kids
Calm and easy to train

I am also searching the internet but thought I'd come here first since you guys are always so helpful. \:\)

I am sorry for all of the birthdays and other stuff that I missed.

Huge Hugs and a pm coming your way!

As for the dog a poodle or poodle mix won't shed but then you do have the time and expense of having to have the pup groomed. Sorry I don't have any better suggestions.

I think some other small dogs that don't shed are

Yorkies
Bichons
Lhasa apso

but again there is the grooming aspect with all of these.

shih tzus don't shed, either, but again, you'd have to groom them daily.

sparky -- lots of hugs and love to you!

As for dogs, I love dachshunds. Sometimes they can be a little weird around kids though... And they are stubborn. But when they love you, it means something! \:\)

What about a beagle? I've seen some small beagles, and they seem to be friendly and low maintenance.

Take care of yourself, sweetie!

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's especially difficult when it happens so fast. You and your Dad will be in my thoughts.

As for the dog, I would also suggest a mini poodle or a poodle hybrid. My MIL bred poodles for years and they are by far one of the smartest dogs on the planet. They are also very loyal and low maintenance. They adapt quickly and are funny little creatures.

Much Love!

Beagles are wonderful, but they do SHED! That is the problem with shed/vs maintenance. If a dog doesn't shed, it usually requires daily grooming or periodic trims. If a dog's coat doesn't require any mt. other than an occational bath, it usually sheds, although some much more than others.

I think I would consider looking at a poodle hybrid. They often don't require the mt. of a purebred poodle and yet usually don't stink or shed and are often not has high strung as some of the other little breeds.

Sending hugs your way \:\) .

As for dogs, I know very little. But based on what I see from the kinds friends have, Beagles are super friendly but I think they can be quite a handful until they're a bit older. So probably not very low maintenance in the training department.

I agree, even though Beagles are cute dogs and some of them are quite small, they are still hounds with some really strong instincts. It takes work to make them into house/companion pets.

So sorry about your Mom, Sparkly.

I have a friend with two cockapoos (poodle/cocker mix). They do not get daily grooming nor do they shed, and get trimmed every couple of months. They are very loving and have a sweet disposition.
