Can the professionals tell?

Here's a question that has been in my mind for quite a long time:
Can a professional in the diamond business spot an Asha or Moissanite just by looking at it close up? Would they need a loupe to tell it is a sim or would they need to use a diamond tester to tell for sure?
I can usually spot a *regular* CZ, but with the quality of Asha and Moissanite, I cannot tell. What do the professionals look for exactly when they look at a stone to determine whether it is diamond or not (without the use of a diamond tester)?
I've never had anyone ask me if my ring is "real" or not, but I don't want to feel like I need to shove my hand in my pocket everytime I'm around someone *in the business*, you know?
Okay, I know, I am truly insane (I think I'm in good company here though ), but I just need to know, can they tell?

In general, I think not, with the naked eye. I have had jewelers at high end stores ask me where I bought my "diamond". Just the other day I was at Joe Escobar (a very nice store in California) wearing an Interlap solitaire, the woman was trying to talk me into putting my 'diamond' into a more ornate setting, a Tacori or similar. Her exact phrase was "a stone that beautiful deserves a prettier setting to show it off". Was she trying to sell me a $4,000 setting? Yes. But I feel like she honestly thought it was real.
I actually took my Asha Asscher into a store that sells Royal Asscher diamonds, and the man there thought that it was real. He wanted me to trade it in for a bigger one. (people have a lot of money around here, even if you're wearing schlumpy clothes you get treated well- many millionaires around here look like they don't have a dime!).

Baubles, My OPINION is that some can. It depends. Moissanite looks like an incredible diamond from a short distance, but can give itself away with the double refraction it has when viewed up close. But that's what I love about it. And I don't consider Moissanite a "fake" like a CZ. It is it's own stone and I don't hide the fact that it is Moissanite. Moissanite is NOT cheap and I am proud to own some!
CZ's can be found out too, but it takes a much more trained eye. CZ's are made to look just like a diamond so the better ones would "fool" most anyone looking - including jewelers who are just looking at it with thier eyes.
As far as the double refraction, what exactly does that look like? I have seen moissanite, and I did not notice anything obvious, but I'm not sure what to look for either. How close would one have to be to a moissanite to see the double refraction? The only thing I picked up on with the moissanite is the slight greenish cast in some lighting, but I believe the stones have come a long way in recent years. The moissanite I saw was a couple of years ago and was a 1 ct.

My little Moissanite earrings look a little "fuzzy" when you look at them up close. They still sparkly like mad in certain lights, but when they are in lighting that makes them not so sparkly, they have a fuzzy look. I think that's the double refraction that causes it. It's hard to describe what I mean. There are no inclusions or anything like that. It's just a "not so crisp" look. I see it in some of the pictures posted here of Moissanite rings. To me, it's a dead giveaway. However, it's not immediately noticeable in all conditions. It has to be in certain lights and you have to be observing it up close. From a distance I think it would be much harder to tell.
I was wearing my Asha in a jewelry store and the jeweler went nuts over how beautiful my diamond was. She even louped it. She kept calling it a diamond. I don't know if she really thought it was a diamond or if she was just being nice and not wanting to embarrass me. I got the feeling that she thought it was real though. I never told her otherwise.

I know some of my friends "diamond rings" are fake cz. I don't tell them I know they are. They play it off like they are real. But I don't wanna hurt there feelings.
I would NEVER say anything about a ring being a CZ because what if it was real and just low quality?!?!? I would be mortified! I've seen some diamonds that look just like CZs and I know for a fact that they are natural diamonds.... I say that if there is that little visual difference between real and "fake" then I don't see the need to spend SO MUCH more money.
