Sorry- I didn't know exactly where to post this:

How did you choose your setting online and why? My boyfriend and I are looking at rings. I had such a solid idea of what would look good on me, and was surprised to find at the jewelry store that some of those styles didn't look quite right on my hand. The opposite was true of some styles I thought I wouldn't like.

So how do you ladies choose your rings/settings online, where you really can't just try on a case full of rings at a time? It is good that you can return something you don't like, but all of your choices seem to be perfect, outta-the-park hits. How do you do it? By getting intimately familiar with styles that look good on you at the store?

That goes double for those of you with custom settings: they look beautiful online. Is a wax mold really enough to go on?

(do Moissaniteco and Asha diamonds offer wax molds for their regular settings?)

Thank you in advance...

I custom made my setting after months and months of looking at pictures of rings online. I tried on tons of styles in jewelry stores and got a feel for what did look good on my hand too. So when it was time to make my ring, I had some ideas about shank width and styles that looked OK-good on me. Were there things that that suited my finger more? Probably. But I picked what I loved and it looked OK too. smile My ring was hand forged, so I had no wax mold to go on... I had to take a leap of faith that I would love it when it was done But I did, and more!! So if you aren't sure, don't rush it! It feels like a long time now, but forever with a ring you don't love is a whole lot longer.

I simply put in the man hours. Lots and LOTS of man hours.

I, surprisingly, didn't do a lot of shopping in stores because I have never been happy with the quality that comes out of the typical jewelry store. The little bit of browsing I did do was to get an idea of stone size.

I came into it knowing that I wanted a very large round center stone and some sort of halo, but I spent about a year and a half looking online at different things. I came across *the one* one day searching on this forum actually. I'm just waiting for the proposal now, so I'm in the home stretch!

There really is no right answer, other than to spend lots of time in front of a computer screen and in stores.

I hear a lot of people saying stuff about what looks right on the hand isn't always what you expect. I'm not sure I totally get that to be honest. What I love OFF the hand (or in my mind) is what I love ON the hand..? I have learned one lesson about myself and the way my fingers are: go up a size! The difference in rings I get in a size 6.25-6.5 vs. 5.5-6 looks like a lot on my fingers! My fingers look pudgy when I buy my actual size rings, which is about a 5.75, or a 6. So now I'll always size up.

I've also learned one other thing. You might be searching for *the ring* but you mind end up finding a life time of future projects! Don't be afraid to pick a ring and stay with it. There are LOTS of other rings and jewelry to be had in the future!

I looked at a lot of pics on PS and eliminated things I wasn't interested in aesthetically. I didn't like solitaires, halos, bezels, or three stones. After that I just looked at the settings the main online vendors had available. I wavered and doubted my choice a bit because I am indecisive in general, but in the end the setting I chose was really the only one that spoke to me and felt right. Nothing else I saw held any interest for me. It turned out beautifully. smile

Oh, also, it was helpful that the vendor I chose (James Allen) had good pics and videos, including a simulation of what it looks like on a hand. That's probably what drew me in the most. However, debating stone size wasn't much of an issue since I went with a real diamond (hadn't yet discovered sims) so I got the largest, best quality stone that fit the budget. Now that I am considering a sim ring to change things up I am agonizing a lot more over stone size.

Just like all the other ladies, I put in lots of time. I would drag my poor bf into every jewelry store we walked by just to look at settings. My local jewelry store ended up having an event where they got in a ton of settings and I went to that with a friend. At the end of the day I just couldn't find anything I liked! I would like part of one and other parts of another. In the end my bf and I talked about what we both liked and decided to have something custom made. I chose Leon Mege because I really love his work. I called him and told him exactly what I wanted, I never saw a rendering, or a wax mold (but what I wanted was pretty simple and strait forward) He made it, bf proposed, and I love it! Don't be afraid to have something custom done if you can't find what you want!

Hi, if you can't go to jewelry stores, even mall ones to try rings in person, I would save all the rings I like on an folder in the computer... Go back to the folder and see what style you gravitate the most towards to...

I didn't know MoissCo and AshaDiamonds sent waxes until a few days ago... Maybe narrow it down to a style you like and see if they could make a wax for you. That way, you could try on a model as close to the ring you would be getting.

But if you can go to a B&M jewelry store, you would have a better selection of styles to try.

its always a gamble buying without trying on, but for most people, it works out smile

one of the most important aspects of buying online, to me, is besides knowing the style is 100% what you want, making sure you understand the mm's and proportions of ring to finger.

most dissatisfaction (aside from setting defects) i think comes from "i didn't realize it was this big/small".

This gave just a very GENERAL idea of what a ring might look like, as paper is only 2D and a ring is 3D, but when I was trying to decide if my "dream ring" would look too wide on my finger (it's a pretty chunky split shank halo), I got the measurements for the actual ring and sketched it out in real size, then cut and taped it to a cheap ring I had to give it some height and so I could wear it around my room and get an idea of size. It certainly wasn't a perfect system, but it did give me a better since of scale and made me feel comfortable making a custom order.
