Choosing your ring online- HOW?

Sorry- I didn't know exactly where to post this:
How did you choose your setting online and why? My boyfriend and I are looking at rings. I had such a solid idea of what would look good on me, and was surprised to find at the jewelry store that some of those styles didn't look quite right on my hand. The opposite was true of some styles I thought I wouldn't like.
So how do you ladies choose your rings/settings online, where you really can't just try on a case full of rings at a time? It is good that you can return something you don't like, but all of your choices seem to be perfect, outta-the-park hits. How do you do it? By getting intimately familiar with styles that look good on you at the store?
That goes double for those of you with custom settings: they look beautiful online. Is a wax mold really enough to go on?
(do Moissaniteco and Asha diamonds offer wax molds for their regular settings?)
Thank you in advance...

I custom made my setting after months and months of looking at pictures of rings online. I tried on tons of styles in jewelry stores and got a feel for what did look good on my hand too. So when it was time to make my ring, I had some ideas about shank width and styles that looked OK-good on me. Were there things that that suited my finger more? Probably. But I picked what I loved and it looked OK too. My ring was hand forged, so I had no wax mold to go on... I had to take a leap of faith that I would love it when it was done But I did, and more!! So if you aren't sure, don't rush it! It feels like a long time now, but forever with a ring you don't love is a whole lot longer.

I simply put in the man hours. Lots and LOTS of man hours.
I, surprisingly, didn't do a lot of shopping in stores because I have never been happy with the quality that comes out of the typical jewelry store. The little bit of browsing I did do was to get an idea of stone size.
I came into it knowing that I wanted a very large round center stone and some sort of halo, but I spent about a year and a half looking online at different things. I came across *the one* one day searching on this forum actually. I'm just waiting for the proposal now, so I'm in the home stretch!
There really is no right answer, other than to spend lots of time in front of a computer screen and in stores.
I hear a lot of people saying stuff about what looks right on the hand isn't always what you expect. I'm not sure I totally get that to be honest. What I love OFF the hand (or in my mind) is what I love ON the hand..? I have learned one lesson about myself and the way my fingers are: go up a size! The difference in rings I get in a size 6.25-6.5 vs. 5.5-6 looks like a lot on my fingers! My fingers look pudgy when I buy my actual size rings, which is about a 5.75, or a 6. So now I'll always size up.
I've also learned one other thing. You might be searching for *the ring* but you mind end up finding a life time of future projects! Don't be afraid to pick a ring and stay with it. There are LOTS of other rings and jewelry to be had in the future!

Just like all the other ladies, I put in lots of time. I would drag my poor bf into every jewelry store we walked by just to look at settings. My local jewelry store ended up having an event where they got in a ton of settings and I went to that with a friend. At the end of the day I just couldn't find anything I liked! I would like part of one and other parts of another. In the end my bf and I talked about what we both liked and decided to have something custom made. I chose Leon Mege because I really love his work. I called him and told him exactly what I wanted, I never saw a rendering, or a wax mold (but what I wanted was pretty simple and strait forward) He made it, bf proposed, and I love it! Don't be afraid to have something custom done if you can't find what you want!

its always a gamble buying without trying on, but for most people, it works out one of the most important aspects of buying online, to me, is besides knowing the style is 100% what you want, making sure you understand the mm's and proportions of ring to finger. most dissatisfaction (aside from setting defects) i think comes from "i didn't realize it was this big/small".
