Mini Schnauzers are NOT CALM and they can be very Terrier hard headed - don't get me wrong, I have had two and loved them, but they need lots of training and also coat upkeep and they are barkers!!!!!

Thanks, everyone!! Keep the suggestions coming. So far, I am leaning towards a Poodle mix of some sort. If it were completely up to me, I would go with a Malti-Poo. OMG, they are soooooo cute!!!

I have 3 neighbors with Miniature Schnauzers and not one of them is hyper and they are all extremely well mannered dogs. Maybe they are the select 3 that didn't get any of those traits you spoke (typed) of. LOL They seem to be excellent dogs IMO.

You are absolutely correct Bryan, they can be wonderful dogs and perfect companions! I shouldn't have made such a general statement, BUT, they do need good training when they are young or they can be very strong willed.

I'm sure you're neighbor's dogs have been well bred and well trained, which makes them excellent pets. I would have another one in a heart beat if they fit my lifestyle, I just wanted her to be aware that they can be very high energy and definitely need "guidance" when they are young or they will have a tendancy to become high strung.

SO sorry for your loss. I have not been around much lately as I just got a new cairn terrier puppy to be a sister to my other two cairn females. They are fantastic dogs and are extremely good around children and do not shed. They are precious. Here is a site to check out:

I am so sorry for your loss...

Shitzhu poodle mix has nice calm temperament which sheds very little, but it does need occasional grooming

Yorkies are very nice, easy to train, and if you keep their hair short... they only need to be groomed couple times a year

Small breed in general is a bit challenged with kids... since they do feel the need to protect themselves sometimes. I especially would stay away from certain breeds: chihuahua, dachshund, beagle, chow, cocker spaniel, etc

Hyper breeds usually are Jack Ressell Terrier, Cairn terrier, West highland terrier, bischon, colgi

Please stay away from "teacup" size as they tend to have more problems such as heart murmur, luxating patella, pyometra, etc

And please do not get fooled by "designer breed" such as yorkipoo, morkie, etc... they are technically a mutt and you shounld't pay more than purebred

Just my .02 Hope it helped \:\)

So sorry for your loss Sparky.

I agree that a poodle mix would be good.

I have also seen some adorable Cavalier King Charles spaniels. All of them lovely dogs chosen by elderly couples or singles who say they are blissfully happy with them. They do shed though and I hear that in USA they can have some awful neurological genetic problems.

My elderly doctor who has now retired and is now single, has a Cavalier King Charles spaniel called Charlie who is an absolute delight. Great with kids, well behaved, friendly to the cat, and a wonderful companion. I didn't notice any smell at all. Doc has major arthritis and credits Charlie with keeping him active with daily walks and with bringing such love and happiness that Doc never imagined when he took Charlie in (on an originally temporary basis). May be worth checking out as an option.

The Poodle Cavalier cross is usually called a Cavoodle, or sometimes a Cavapoo. Something to add to your list of contenders. Hope this helps. \:\)
