I am in love with Tanzanite, and actually own one (set in a pendant). But it is so soft (only 6.5 on Moh Scale) that I am afraid to wear it often .

So I am searching for an alternative stone in Tanzanite color in size range 10-12mm and/or 6.5-7mm. Which BTD lab-created gemstone look most similar to Tanzanite? How similar are they? I want the blue shade not deeper than navy blue.

Thank you for the information! I am considering to get one \:D

In what kind of pendant setting do you think it will look good, a simple 4-prong basket with rabbit ears, a halo like this (or this ), or something else? My current 9mm tanzanite pendant is a solitaire and looks pretty. I was wondering if it could be prettier in a different setting.

Does BTD's Kashmir Blue Sapphire look fairly similar to Tanzanite too, in terms of color? Does it have a shade darker than royal blue? It's a little pricier but harder than Winfield's Tanzanite CZ.

you might consider an Iolite. I have an iolite ring and everyone thinks its tanzanite.

Iolite vs tanzanite

 Quote:
Iolite with prominent blue color tones resembles blue sapphire and in lighter blue violet shades represents the more expensive, tanzanite. Iolite gemstones are quite durable and suited for setting in jewelry with a hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Moh's scale of hardness.

I would say that none of BTD's gemstones look like Tanzanite. Winfield's are a good option as mentioned before. There are also Tanzanite colored Sapphires (lab created) which you can find but honestly I prefer the CZ in terms of color. ;\)

Iolites are still pretty soft (softer than an emerald) so I would still be careful if you put it in a ring. It is cheap though!

Another tanzanite sim is called Fosterite (Tanzanion?) but it is also pretty soft (7) so I am not sure if that would work for what you are looking for.

YAG (Yttrium Aluminum Garnet) is another tanz sim and looks like it has a hardness of 8.5:

This article is quite old now (1999) but it lists some interesting info about synthetic tanzanite...

Thank you all for the suggestions. I am getting a Winfield's CZ in Tanzanite color. Hope it will satisfy my desire!

Joyce - your ring is very lovely! It is on my list now. Hope you don't mind ;1
